The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"I really think he needs to get more out front on this . . . Listening to the mayor of NO and the governor of LA, it's clear they are not up to the task."

I agree with you mostly, except for the implied criticism of the President.

The mayor and the governor are duly elected officials, and they bear first responsibility. While the feds no doubt will have to take over, Bush has to let the locals go at it first.

He gave disaster declarations before the storm even struck, thus allowing FEMA and other fed agents to get their personnel and resources ready. He put pressure on the La. leaders for mandatory evacuations. He has the Navy on the way to NO. He will be on site in person soon.

Freepers are generally indignant at federal interference. Let's be consistent.

"You're absolutely right - but what of the generators? They had only less than a day of fuel?"

I think that the generator's got flooded. (Note to NO - next time put them ABOVE the floodwater level).

Hello,

It seems like a really bad dream at this point, even a short stay in NO is a treasure (was?). I have gone into overload with all of this, and will now try to sleep. Bless you all, MOgirl

when he declared the Pope dead, when, in fact he lived another 2 days

To be fair, EWTN of all stations, made the very same premature announcement.

Once the water reaches the same elevation on both sides of the levee, the levee is pretty meaningless at that point.

Crews Pass Dead to Reach Storm Survivors

By BRETT MARTEL

Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Rescuers along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast pushed aside the dead to reach the living Tuesday in a race against time and rising waters, while New Orleans sank deeper into crisis and Louisiana's governor ordered storm refugees out of this drowning city.

----snip---

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said hundreds, if not thousands, of people may still be stuck on roofs and in attics, and so rescue boats were bypassing the dead.

"We're not even dealing with dead bodies," Nagin said. "They're just pushing them on the side."

Why are there no pictures of the levee breaks? Seems to me that is where the news is.

I was commenting on that to my wife earlier. That is the huge story. They showed one breach that I saw but it looked like an overflow. The breach I haven't seen yet.

I just found it odd that traffic flowing in on I-10 was one or two vehicles while there was a traffic jam flowing out. I would have used at least one lane of the inbound as outbound like they do in cities for football game crowds.

Good idea except for one thing. The ENTIRE area around the Super Bowl is flooded and IIRC the water is rising.

I'm not looking for him to be on-site. IMO, that would be a huge mistake at this point, taking up valuable resources for a photo op. He needs to get on the airwaves and lay out the plan, if there is one. The only plan I've heard so far is that they're working on a plan. I'm sure that's very reassuring to the people who are living a nightmare that gets worse almost by the hour.

Well, it will equalize the pressure, of course all this water will further weaken what didn't already cave in.

Two feet of water around the SuperDome is all you need to know that the rat bastard Mayor of NO is not doing his job. He's sitting around trading recipes with that equally repugnant Larry King.
