Don't give to the Red Cross - they've turned into a self-serving boondoggle. Organizations like the Salvation Army are much more effective and cost-efficient for short-term relief. For longer periods, find relief agencies with adequate oversight mechanisms - those can't be in-house.
Since no one can begin clean-up, powers that be could get crews to the older model truck/shipping containers (there are thousands in fields across the USA) to cut in doors and windows, pipes, plumbing and roof a/c, etc... Transport to best locale be it parks or fields for temporary housing. Mexicans have been doing this for years and it works--it's far better than being homeless or living in a shelter.
We can support this effort by donations of used furniture, bedding, appliances, grills and such (we all have extra "stuff" we can share for the hurricane victims.
Those I saw had shutters, a garden fence, flowers an such.
Down here in Port Charlotte, folks hit by Charley must evacuate FEMA trailers real soon but those just hit have no job/home to go back to. More are needed, why not use the resources we already have? (Recycling at it's best)
I was thinking the same thing, I live in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area...I don't have any room for any people, but if there were a motel or something that was offering discounts for rooms, I could probably pay for a few days for a couple...
I just heard on local news that there are some shelters in Dallas that are already full. I heard one woman from NO that said they just drove...didn't know where to go...and ended up here.
Announced on Channel 6 this morning that the area code is out.
What's with the marching band in Biloxi??
The CG coordinator of SAR missions has a dozen copters for the entire coast. He told NPR he flew out to Pascagoula and the devastation was complete there, 90% vanished and 10% wrecked along the beach. The pilots were said to have that look in their eye of utter awe of what they have seen, chopping holes in roofs, beyond anything they could describe, and if MS looks this bad...
"Bottom line. Not enough refineries in the USA"
You're exactly right about the lack of refineries. Congress has known this was a problem for years. I wonder if the new Energy Bill, which was loaded with Pork, addressed the refinery problem?
Excuse me?

Aug 30, 4:40 PM EDTGov.: New Orleans Needs to Be Evacuated
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- With water rising in the streets of New Orleans and conditions rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that the tens of thousands of people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers would have to be evacuated."The situation is untenable," Blanco said at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."
Because of two levees that broke Tuesday, the city was rapidly filling with water, the governor said. She also said the power could be out for a long time, and the storm broke a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.
To a point, I agree with you. But programs like Britt Hume serve a great purpose..there is a war going on with 150,000 American Troops in harms way. This is still going on, it doesn't stop for Hurricane coverage, or Natalie Holloway.
Not just yes, but also that if it could be seen in a dry area, there is remedial action you can take. If you don't know it is occuring because it is hidden by water on the protected side, it will eventually undermine that whole section of the levee and cause a major failure above it.
What the hell is your problem?
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. That's your contribution to this thread??
That was a reply to #290. Mea Culpa - should have put the original in quotes or something.
I think we have room for about 4-6 people if most are kids. Can squeeze in more for a short time. Good schools cheap housing available here too.
Chill out!
These people are going to need long term help.
Ah ok I've forgotten the italics for stuff I've replied to, or typed them wrong, many times.
Fox is the best for politics, got to hand it to CNN, haven't watched them in ages, but they rule on this story... they were the only ones who stayed on live last night after 10p.m. Fox and MSNBC went to reruns. This isnt a re-run-type of story. I knew from CNN when I went to bed last night that the levies were giving and leaking.
NPR is airing an interview with a Coast Guard helicopter pilot. He said Pascagoula (sp?) is devestated, just gone.
