The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Maybe its designed to fail? Rather than take the whole thing down to the bottom.
"

Yes,the spans are designed to fail, sacrificed for the piers, which are harder to replace.

But my point is I would not have needed to be ordered out.

Isn't it funny that you have to make that point in this forum.

People blaming them government for not ordering them out soon enough.

I don't doubt what you say is true, but once the gas lines break after the quake there will be no water to fight the fires. The city will burn.

I'm surprised the airline let her fly!

But glad everyone made it safely.

Mayor says that most of the persons on the rooftops he saw during the first trip were not there (had been rescued) during his last trip.

It was discussed a lot on here Saturday night that the Mayor was meeting with lawyers before making the decision mandatory. Why the wait is what I would like to know? And then why no buses, etc. to help with the evacuation. It was you are on your own in your own cars.

On Saturday I was afraid that the winds were going to blow the Superdome apart.

It never occured to me that it could survive only to start filling with water. If too much water gets in there, they'll have to start lifting people out through the holes in the roof.

The video on WWL of the NO damage is making me physically ill.

So the lake is going to rise from 5 feet above normal to 10 feet? That is hard to believe. There is a a very large gap between the lake and the gulf. It must be a couple of miles wide.

There's no way anyone can stay in New Orleans. No food, no water, no sewage, no electricity, no way to get around until the flood waters are pumped out. Plenty of chances for death, disease, and injury. They need to set up places for the remaining people, and they have to move them out.

But my point is I would not have needed to be ordered out.

Same here, though I would've taken time to figure out whether it was as bad as the mayor said (which would've taken all of, oh, 5 minutes).

Are they getting them out or not? They need to think outside the box. Call in volunteers with boats or something. Just get them to dry land and then worry about the other stuff. Help is just across the river.

No, the person you were talking to. I get so upset that when people start talking the South it always boils down to race.... and the place that is really getting ready to boil over (for the third time) is LA -- only this time a race war between the blacks and hispanics in South Central.

You've asked me that question twice now, for some reason I don't understand.

I was literally despondent on the threads Sunday night thinking the city would be destroyed.

The storm took a jog to the east and it did look like the city was spared. A day later we know it wasn't.

So why exactly do you keep asking me this question?
