The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The biggest problem was/is that the place is run by a bunch of weak spined, mindless libs! This is typical lib/dem incompetence that led to, the late evac call, the lack of resources to evac people( don't feed me this "they're all poor Bu!!$#!%" the city has, had actually, school buses!), the lack of proper pumps and levees. I hear tell they had new pumps, but wouldn't prioritize their installation. Hmmmmm..... a dirt levee, hell that oughta be OK. Jest pile it up a little higher thaere.

Total incompetence, complements of the lib/dem machine.

It's gonna top 200 in MS alone.

I think we'll be lucky if it doesn't top 1000.

His entire advance team was in place on Monday to see what needed to be done for his visit and what the States needed -- they were in addition to FEMA who was on the ground before the hurricane hit.

nation's history.

Sorry. I was replying to an actual bigot who wanted to quiz us on if we noticed the "ethnicity" of the looters.

are there ANY roads passable into new orleans now?

Someone posted upthread that a bridge over the Mississippi was sound. He referred to it as the GNO, but also said it was the one with the rail line, so I questioned whether he was confusing the GNO with the Huey Long.

From other postings, it appears that things are in far better shape on the West Bank.

You are, thankfully talking rationally! Not emotionally! It's hard to see this happening and there is nothing we can do, but casting blame, on the powers that be, isn't helping. The sad fact is, evacuation orders went out, and most of these people refused to go. Even of those who decided to stay in hotels, had offers to get out and go to Texas or FLA, they said if they had to stay in a hotel and not go home, they would stay in the one they were already in.

Even the media were told they should leave. I hate seeing this as much as anyone, I wish they had all heeded the warnings. That said, I think more buses should have been loaded up, and NG trucks, to get people out that had no car etc, the first day they issued the warnings. Including the prisoners.

calling for a day of prayer for the state when people are still in attics, probably drowning, and the superdome is full of people about to die is the most stupid, silly thing I ever saw a leader do

Thank you.

That's a bizarre photo. What the heck would cause damage like that to a highway bridge? Every other section of bridge structure has been lifted out of place.

US Army, do you know of any coordinated civilian volunteer efforts?

36,700 in shelters in New Orleans now. Nine total showers.

I almost want to make a joke about that, but I can't. It's indicative of a very serious problem. Everyone is shifting to the looter storyline and slightly more desperate conditions for those covering the story.

The real story is whether we can get the resources into the city in time to save it.

""There is a photo above showing boththe breech and the mouth of the canal.

the canal is alot narrower than the breech - and duh - did it ever occur to put a lock on the mouth of the canal?""

"YOU need a timeout"

I don't follow?

With what do you take offense? Why would you not want a lock on a canal that has miles of suspect dikes runnig thru the middle of NO?

I agree with that, but the problem is that once you "permit" looting, its an easy step to seeing assaults and murder.

the LA state police are moving SWAT teams in according to FNC. let them open fire, I don't want to media to tag Bush with that.

Dunno about that.
Ever work for a company that announces they are shutting their doors in 60 days?
Granted they all don't run out with goods at the same time, but I guarantee you on the 61 day, 80% of the stuff not nailed down is gone.
