The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Do they still have Higgins' boats? Seriously, they could load 60,000 people onto ships in a couple of days.

If you look at the pictures that was posted on another thread (pulled for some reason) you see that two major levies --one was 17th street -- the first one to go; and the other Filmore Street iver the London Ave, Canal --were under construction and depending on sand bags to hold bag any potential hurricane surges for the near future...

In addition near the Louis Armstrong Airport there was ten miles of incomplete levees from the Bonnet Carre Spillway -- five miles from Lake Ponchartrain; a 5-10 foot wall of sandbags along the Airline Drive to the Mississippi Rver levee near the airport; another 60 miles o flevees that needed to be raised and were years away from completion; computer models said that the low levee from Monticello Ave in Jefferson Parish near the city's water plant was a likely spot for a major flood to enter the city.

With this information in hand the fact they didn't call a mandatory evacuation -- or face arrest -- is terrible.

Look at it this way - this woman is the prototype for why women can't run an administration.

I wish someone would have told Maggie Thatcher this ..

Anyone noticing the predominant ethnicity of those doing the looting.

Precisely the same as the predominant ethnicity of those who did not escape NOLA on Sunday.

What was YOUR point?

Saw Cooper earlier. It looked like he would need to breath into a paper bag... he was practically hyperventilating. I thought I heard or saw that someone tried to steal gas from the CNN truck (so much info). But, what kid of "trouble" is he in?

So it's the airlines fault that the Governor and Mayor didn't round up every bus in Southern LA and send it to NO to evacuate people?

Some people have this asinine belief that the mayor and governor are responsible for not forcefully removing everyone from their homes and forcing them onto buses. A million people in a few days.

There are no flights fromm No to BTR.

If tourists could get to the airpport, they could get out of NO to BTR. I don't think the tourists are going to die heere, I think the people who are going to die are the residents of NO. And they would not have been flying out of the airport.

I could be wrong, but I think the airlines wouldn't have made a huge difference.

The big difference would have been an evacuation of NO sat AM with every available bus, truck, whatever. That would have taken leadership and a strong stomach.

No, I rely on my FReeper family to tell me what the TV is saying. I am listening to WWL radio and will relay anything I get from that.

LT Gov just spoke about price gouging and now someone else is saying 37,600 are in shelters.

We Will rebuild this city

Damn them all.

steveegg: CNN's Aaron Brown must not have been paying attention since the end of the business day Friday. Film of whatever he was on at 11.
