The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

There has been so much water driven into the area by the hurricane that it may indeed take a while for the lake, normally at sea level, to come back down to sea level.

To get to the bottom of it, we need to know at what level the lake would run off in the natural process. We don't know that, but I heard it can't go much above one foot of sea level before it does. I think we all would make great reporters!

What is the final decision about that long broken bridge video we saw this afternoon?

I confirm it sure looks like it to me.. although its been 25 years since I have been across it.

She flat out said she received no warning about the hurricane (which is a lie), and they dilly-dallied about evacuation until Sunday or Monday.

See Diddle E. Sqat's thread on how "well" they are doing.

It simply can't be done, and there's no way to tell which houses belong to people who evacuated and who didn't.

They could use infrared to spot still warm bodies within some of the homes. Perhaps we can utilize detailed infrared satellite imagery.

I lived thru the LA riots and the looting is scary. It is gang members run amok.

The Korean liquor store owners knew exactly how to deal with the scum.

Calling for a day of prayer is IDIOTIC when that is your only response to Larry King's question of what are you going to do tomorrow.

Trent Lott has to go on television to talk to the President because he no longer takes Lott's calls ; )

ROFLMAO.........well, it's his own fault: he did say he didn't have to work with Bush anymore, didn't he? And then he trashed him in that book!

Bush to Lott: Go to hell.

I posted this earlier and people thought I was blaming the residents of NO for not leaving. What I was questioning was the competency of the Mayor and the Governor. Why the heck did they not order BEFORE Saturday that people leave? I can understand people who could not leave still being there--but to me is is the heighth of irresponsibility for the Mayor and the Governor not to have put out an evacuation order much earlier than they did. Even a few hours could have saved many lives!

And to then blame the airlines? Aaarrgghh!!

"What I haven't heard discussed is the Louisiana politics here. The mayor of NO voted for GWB and came in as a reformer. He has been exposing the rotten core in the schools and alot of former politicos are being looked at."

Basically, 2-5 % here want to blame him because he's black.

He impressed me on WWL TV. Told a straight story I believe (for now). Tried to get helos to the levees, NG didn't respond well. NG later released BS generic statement.

We'll see what happens...

I don't think it's set in how many thousands may have died.

As I understand it, the President can call the Attorney General to federalize (nationalize) the state national guard. He can (and should) order them to go in and restore order under his command, as local folks are coming to the conclusion that the police in New Orleans are unable to control the rising looting and prisoner uprising situation. There is no shoot to kill policy on looters it seems (and one cannot expect it out of the politically correct 'leaders' we are seeing on TV), and in the streets it seems to become a circus, with now N.O. policemen being shot in the head by looters, regular citizens afraid to go out in the street, what's the next step. It is a shame a segment of our country has come to this, but federal troops have been brought in before to restore order and uphold the rights and safety of law abiding citizens. It won't get any better otherwise I believe.

We used to live on Grand Cayman. In Cayman, when a hurricane is approaching, Cayman Airways ads flights. They evacuate tourists first, then residents if there is still time.
