The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

It would be very overwhelming and she likely does not have the experience that someone like Rudy or Jeb has in dealing with something of this magnitude.

I believe that's why President Bush was so proactive in taking the lead to begin with.

Another point is that we continue to focus on New Orleans, probably the most developed city of those directly affected. If New Orleans is bad--what about Gulfport and Biloxi, and the small areas in between?

There was a photo of a guy with a bucket of beer, and I believe the caption did say he had "looted" it.

It's too early for real shortages to actually reach this far north. Something else is up. Possibly fears for future supplies, but we still have gas, "in the pipelines" so to speak, but it is a warning of what we might expect in the days to come.

I'm not sure if this is comparable to 9/11, but it's close to it as far as human misery & destruction.

Although there hasn't been the same number of casualties, it seems to me that this is going to be worse in economic, historic, and cultural terms.

I think the city is lost. I just don't see how they can rebuild to what it was before, and there is so much history that is gone. For example, I stayed in a youth hostel that used to be a Confederate civil war hospital. It was rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of dead soldiers.

If the water stays high for weeks, how can that possibly be saved?

Because of a lack of functioning jails, police, or what not, looters are being 'ticketed' or warned, on the hopes that they can be dealt with later. Nobody is being arrested.

No looters are being shot on sight. (The situation is not under control: my take).

I just cannot watch Fox for big news stories, CNN is much better. Fox better get their act together or else CNN is going to catch up with them.

Fox's schtick is opinion journalism. They don't have the investment in newsgathering to be a serious "big story" network. And this is a story in the US.

A foreign story would be even worse. Fox is good at what it is, a place where political ideas can be fought over.

this partisan ranting and raving against la/nola officials is getting tiresome and has to provide great laughs for the other side.

It's not so much about the partisan politics. It's about watching your state reap the fruits of years of corruption and incompetence. We had the opportunity to elect someone who was able to think on his feet, he had a plan of action because it was discussed in a political debate. Instead people couldn't see past their own prejudices and partisan politics. My very liberal sister now gets it. These pols could bus the voters to the polls but they couldn't bother to bus them out to save their lives.

Yes. It appears that the levees along the Mississippi River are holding fine. They are much bigger and higher. The problem is the canal that links the river to the lake, Industrial Canal, with a lock that controls the difference in levels. It appears that the flooding River is flowing over the lock or the lock is open, and there is a breach in the canal just beyond the lock.

NPR is starting to talk about damages, I think estimates of $125 billion. A problem is that the communications network is completely gone. People are being evacuated from New Orleans. DHS is sending resources to the Katrina-affected area. Atlanta FEMA said prepositioned supplies are being disbursed, but that rescue is the priority. They said it is too early for assessments or casualty counts. Bush was speaking in San Diego earlier today.

I am noting NPR because FM radio and batteries may be the only way people are getting current news in certain Katrina-affected areas.

This is what you asked for from the last thread: Their projections including losing refineries and offshore pumping and then China taking the opportunity to up the antie and buying oil Mid-Atlantic that Russia was sending to us (at a higher price), putting a dent in home heating reserves and a particularly cold winter without adequate oil supplies to get everyone through this.

I saw this in the previous thread. Do you have any links, name of authors, or anything I can use to read further into this?
