The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

From what I understand, there's about a 7-10 day stockpile of refined gas. Add to that the supply from unaffected refineries and foreign sources.
Dunno about the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, but northern Wisconsin uses "straight, non-boutique" gas, so that should be a solid number.
No matter WHAT our President does, the radical left will find fault. He could single handedly rescue 2 dozen single moms and 60 starving children and someone would accuse him of having a "smirk" on his face... Leaders LEAD and George W Bush is a leader in the finest tradition of the best!
If I recall correctly, the Mayor supported the President's re-election.
Some of these decisions go back to the direct aftermath of Hurricane Betsy, and thus to Schiro's and Moon Landrieu's administration.
Hate to blame the man for everything that has gone before. Most people aren't a Giuliani. When we are frightened and overwhelmed, it shows.

Personally, I'd like to have the resources at the moment to load my tools and drive down there to help rebuild, but it's a good bet that one more half-crippled semi-geezer would be more of a nuisance than anything else.

Now, what does Governor Blanco say? "I don't know."
Governor Barbor would have asked for the guy's location and told him he would send a rescue crew to the hotel, or told him to head somewhere to be picked up. He would have given the guy some HOPE!
Can you imagine? The guy is asking for help and all she can say is "I don't know."

There are photos of small craft under power within a few hundred feet of the breech. These 40hp boats are very capable of towing vessels up to 75 ft to the breech area - espcially as the current is going that way.
The depth of the lake drops to a few feet after the breech and anything towed from the lake will snag there - do this 100 times and you have an effective structure that will become more water tight as weeds, lumber, etc fills up nooks and crannies.
Even in the superdome where the number of officials and the relief effort is probably the strongest...things are getting testy and dire.
I pray the NG and needed equipement to evacuate people and to establish and maintain order during it, gets in there within the next 12-18 hours.
I suggest you call the Corps of Engineers and lend your expertise..

The person who designed Amsterdam's pumping system way back when then worked on New Orleans' system (no doubt modified as time went on, but there is that connection....)
Yes, agreed. Like I said, Nagin had no good choices. He also knew the city would turn on itself if he ordered it evacuated and he also knew he'd catch heat for that if the storm turned. So, his only choice was to pray for it to turn. It didn't work out.
