Katrina Live Thread, Part XI
Various ^ | 30 August 2005 | Various

Posted on 08/30/2005 1:34:04 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Thanks to the President's leadership, FEMA was authorized to preposition relief assets.

Relief is one thing...rescue is another.

No, and some poster said Lake Pontchatrain is still 4 feet above sea level at its center,

And I heard some poster say it was 4 inches above normal. We are at an impasse..

Someone famous said something like, "water is an irresistible force." One can not just "plug" problems like this. As you point out, plugging buys you nil when it continues to flow over the entire bank.

Can dredgers and barges get to those points?

It takes a little time...the gulf waters nearby are probably still a bit high, too.

Plug it with what equipment? The barges that Katrina smashed and drove ashore everywhere? The ships that the companies would have sailed to Texas to avoid the storm? Plug it with what staff? The employees that evacuated when the mandatory order was given?

Imagine if all but one bridge and all the tunnels in NYC had been knocked down on 9/11. Now clog every street in Manhattan with debris and then flood most of them. Next turn off all the electricty, gas and water on the island. Have every ferryboat sunk or sailed away to Philly for safety. Finally, have thousands of people trapped all over Manhattan who need rescue and evacuation. How quickly would have large amounts of aid and workers have come?

Governor Barbour basically told President Bush that it's much too early for him to come to Mississippi.

If the city is underwater, does the Mayor get paid? And by whom?

Actually this mayor is better than most, he came in and has done some good things I hear.

I'm not terribly worried about the levees on the Mississippi. They're awfully big and the river really isn't pushing the banks.

I'm not sure it really matters, though. The damage has been done. What I thought was going to happen the day of the hurricane happened the next day instead. The city will be uninhabitable for weeks at best.

And when people try to live in uninhabitable areas, they die. So the main question is how or if you can get these people out. The window for this is not long. You can't live in the attic or on the roof of your house in the hot Louisiana sun without water for a week, that's for certain.

This is going to get far more ugly in the next few days.

My sister is safe. Hundreds of trees down on her place, power lines down, no water, no phone. Her hubby is guarding the place and watching the animals, the llama survived the storm, and she is in BR but exhausted.

The llama is in the bedroom exhausted? Poor thing. Does it sleep in the bed or on the floor? ;)

I've got friends headed into Northern Wisconsin today and tomorrow. Are the shortages so serious that they might have problems finding gas along Interstate 35?

Foti used to be the New Orleans Sheriff.

From the way he was talking, I'm glad that it's "former".

"This Mayor is not very reassuring. Saying the next highest priority this morning was to put in the sandbags but doesn't know why it didn't happen. Will check and find out why. Unbelieveable."

You got that right.

There's a commerial out on TV in the miswest for Vonage DSL. It has different scenes os morons screwing up. The background music is appropriate to all those clowns(D) in LA.
