The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

> the break is 2 blocks wide

I was just reading an article the other week about how the Soviets (in the 1960s) used nuclear explosions to redirect rivers and create reservoirs (the Soviet version of Atoms for Peace, etc.). I guess such a strategy wouldn't fly in the ol' US of A, huh?

He did a great job by realizing early on how serious this would be and getting FEMA mobilized before the cane even hit.

I don't want to impeach Bush. Not even close. But right now many if not the majority of folks in this country are displeased with Bush. If he comes across as unconcerned about New Orleans it will turn so much public opinion against him that I really fear what the consequences will be. I hope that doesn't happen but he's on thin enough ice as it is right now.

Ah, but that's all substance and what is being clamored for is style :) GWB has the doers on the ground now and is smartly staying out of their way. Why divert the SAR flights so the prez can enter the air space? He can do more with the excellent communication facilities at his ranch and in DC tomorrow while his experts assess and present him with their recommendations for action. You can bet that if something is needed sooner, he will green light it if he hasn't already delegated the necessary authority.

Impeached or resign for not talking to you on tv? That's a little extreme, don't you think?

If your definition of short order is two months, I would agree.
That is approximate time that forced labor spent in Chernobyl on concrete shield, about 600,000 soldiers in 20 minutes shifts.

For God's sake chill out. He has to know what the Hell he is talking about when he addresses the Nation. He is now coordinating from Washington, and has to meet with advisers on all aspects and of this disaster. There has to be reasonable planning here. I believe that those people in LA that are in charge have mucked up from the get go and the Feds are probably taking over. HE IS NOT SLICK WILLIE!

I don't think it is as simple as that, or it probably would be done. Lots of people are showing up in N.O. too... but getting the people and the equipment to the places they can be used is decidedly non-trivial.

Some problems are just bigger than can be solved like they do in the movies. Nothing about this is going to happen very fast. That's just the situation.

No, and some poster said Lake Pontchatrain is still 4 feet above sea level at its center, and the mayor said the water could go as much as 3 feet above sea level, so maybe the Mississippi levees are OK. One would think that the lake would get back to near sea level in fairly short order, since it has a pretty big gap out into the gulf, but I don't know how that lake works, or what tides it is subject to.

"Of course, the WTC was heavy damage in a limited area within our biggest metropolitan area -- equipment and trained people to operate was everywhere. "

My point is that it took the govt two days to get their act together.

These are'nt people that get jobs done - they are beuracrats and meeting holders.
