The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

If there is a news blackout, it will be because the levees have totally gone. Keep hearing that the levees are getting in worse shape.
What I just heard on WWL said they are trying to rescue everyone they can but they cannot tell the beginning and end of the Mississippi River right now because of all the holes and breeches."
Important to note, the Mississippi passes all three of New Orlean's levee basins. Without a location on those levee breaks, the river levee breaks referred to might well be in the eastern bowl, which has already flooded all it is going to.
At this point, all we know about flooding in downtown for sure is that it sources to Lake Ponchartrain via the 17th St. Canal.
Maybe a hair splitting point, but so far the River isn't loose into downtown....not yet anyway.
Are we talking about the article that the pumps in the east part of NO are expected to fail?

last i heard a few minutes ago they were going to try and drop concrete "j" barriers like on freeways into the gap and follow up with huge sandbags..must be getting dark soon..?
Where would any rescue planes land? Anyone know if any airstrips are intact enough for landing?
I imagine conditions are not suitable for landings or they would be doing it. Maybe someone else knows.

Typed in Orleans Parish Prison on Google map search but couldn't get it to link to this page....Looks like it close to where the water was pouring over the levi at the bridge.....I'd want out of there too.
I think the feds were in charge of the River levees and if the Mississippi changes course it is a bigger issue than new orleans having a flood. I don't know for sure but that is my guess.
I have a memory of people talking about Miss flooding NO and a decision to break the levee at Baton Rouge to protect New Orleans being discussed. It has enormous implications. The state Capitol is in BR and that is who would make that decision.
I don't know much about the 1927 flood but this may have been an issue then,,maybe someone else remembers.

Bourbon street is flooding from what I am hearing. That is 2.5 feet above sea level and 1.5 feet above Lake P. Where is it coming from?
I'm listening to the local news using the links at the top of this post ... it's a lot more informative than the network stuff. Their point about the water is the raw sewage in it means ANY cut will get infected. And chances are good you will get a cut as you can't see what you are stepping on. Once you get infected, what are you going to do? where are you going to go? That's their point.
I stayed up until the thing turned slightly to the east. Little did I guess what it would do to the Floria Parishes and the Gulf Coast eastwards. A tsunami!
