The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"sleep with me, sleep with my llama"

That could be the title of the Tarantino movie.

I didn't realize the gas problem would start that fast.

The infrastructure is complex and has lots of interdependencies. The buffers of inventory are not very big.

From WWL: more anticipated flooding in Jefferson Parish, 12-15 more feet of water expected. They tried to sand bag the pump at 17th Street canal, but it backed the pump up (or some such terminology).

The closest assault carriers (which carry LCACs) are already on the way. The Navy is sending what they have available - which, thanks to Klinton's slashing of the budget, isn't much.

WLL: 17th Street Canal Pump was going to be sandbagged against the water. That effort has failed, pump will soon shut down as it submerges. Water will hit 3ft above sea level in the area, which means that there is going to be 12-18' of flooding.

I was watching the news here in FW, they were interviewing some Texans who were heading to NO to repair the power lines.

One man said as they passed cars in their convoy people posted a note saying thank you to their car window.
(someone fleeing Katrina?)
The grown man was nearly in tears and I could tell he would rebuild NO alone if he had to.

It never occurred to me how such a little thing like a quickly written note against a car window could mean so much.
It was obvious it really touched this man and he was gung ho to rebuild.

Help is on the way.

I thought so too but I heard on Channel 6 that a tanker had broken lose from its mooring, partially sunk, and was leaking oil.

The pump at the 17th st. Canal is about to shut down because the water has risen too much. Water to be about 3 ft above sea level across NO and Metairie/Kenner.

The sandbagging attempt failed.

Source WWL streaming video.

*** From the Hurricane City live stream: some reports (not confirmed at this point) of rioting at prison in/near New Orleans***

BREAKING FROM WWL....

Sandbagging efforts at a breach HAVE NOT WORKED! Pump will fail, and waters will rise to 3 FEET above sea level!

This means 12-15 feet deep waters in the east end and Jefferson Parish..

WWL is calling for people to IMMEDIATELY EVACUATE these areas!

Jackson square is on east end of the French Quarter (which starts east of Canal street.) D Day museum is west of the warehouse district

Jackson Square is smack dab in the middle of the French Quarter, right off the Mississippi river. D-Day museum is in the Warehouse district, right off Lee Circle, about 10 blocks west of the Quarter.

They have to clear airspace when the President comes into an area and he will not be there until it is safe to clear out the skies.
