Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

These levees are being breeched -- water is continuing to rise in New Orleans according to the Governor. Tells me that levees are in a precarious stage right now with breeches already happening.

I haven't heard where anyone has seen any pictures of the broken levies yet. After this much time, it must be calculated.

Peach, I've got three clients in New Orleans, and one in Long Beach, Ms. Long Beach is on a barrier island, so I fear for the worst for that business.

Those in New Orleans were in Metairie and Kenner, both under water last night.

I am thinking of those people and the horror they must feel, watching their homes and their businesses ruined. This catastrophe is really hard to get one's mind around; the scope and the totality of it exceeds anything I had imagined.

The emotions are like those I experienced on 9/11, except there is no anger. Just tears, and pain, and a desire to rush and help. I know that's not possible or even desireable, but writing a check seems so sterile.

Everything personal that I was worrying about yesterday just shrinks into insignificance as I watch homes burning, lives being altered forever, and hopes and dreams put on hold for who knows how long.

But, there are millions of very good people in this country, and we're at our best when there are people in need. There is nothing more important right now than to do what we can for these people on the Gulf Coast.

Ah, just heard on FOXNEWS that Wal-Mart has given $1 million to the Salvation Army, and more is promised.

Selfishly, it's just so sad to watch a beautiful city that I've visited many times literally die right before me.

You are totally correct. IMHO is the worst possible timing given the disaster.

That's what I've heard, too. It sounds like the surge piled up against the eastern shore and flooded Weeks Bay, Fish River, etc.

I'm curious to know if Dauphin Island still has a west end.

They deserve everything that happens to them IMHO. Great to hear that lady anchor blasting the MSM like CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. that said New Orleans didn't get hit as bad as they thought they would.

Studio for WDSU is probably taking on water. The engineers staying behind unplugged everything and moved it to the second floor yesterday.

Have not heard anything about St. Bernard parish. No arials from the north shore. National news crews only cover New Orleans. They are totally disgusted with the National News crews.

Video from a CNN reporter that "probably doesn't know a thing about the city!"

The governor has instructed the highway patrol to block off all entrance into the state.

What is your source for this? We are headed back to Louisiana today via Texas.

May I remind everyone that Floridians are STILL without homes from last year's hurricanes.

If EVER there was a time for President Bush to announce a TOTAL suspension of money to the UN, IMF, World Bank and zillions of other treasury giveaways, it is NOW!

America needs to help Americans. This is a major catastrophe. We need to seriously call into question why we are spending billions overseas and trying to "end poverty all over the world" when there is a mega-billion dollar need right now in New Orleans.

Floridians will be paying SBA loans for the next 30 years after the four hurricanes last year. New Orleans resident will be doing the same. The money being sent to Africa and all over the world is freebie cash grants with no strings attached. Why should Americans have to pay 30 year SBA loans after a national disaster but foreigners get OUR tax dollars with no strings attached?

This is a national disgrace.

We need to stop all this US Treasury giveaway (throwaway) and start taking care of American citizens.

I am begging Congress and President Bush to start taking of Americans!

First of all, let me be clear: This is not directed at YOU, you just happened to be the most recent person commenting on the casinos.

I am sick and tired of hearing about the conditions of the damned casinos! Yesterday, in the midst of the vast human tragedy unfolding, Gov. Barbour saw fit to comment on the condition of the casinos. It's liek they are at the top of the list. Who cares about the stupid casinos? Let them go out of business, who cares? There are DEAD people, people who have lost EVERYTHING. tourism is DEAD for the foreseeable futute. The least of our worries should be how the casinos fared.

There, I feel a little better.

Until we were able to see video footage of this, no one should have minimized the damages. Yet that is just what happened.

Civilian watercraft *are* heading to the area. 300 of the "rescue boats" that went out at dawn are airboats from other states. 60 of them were from Texas.

Dunkirk had a lot of problems, but the most important thing to remember was that it *worked*.

Like I said, easier said than done when you dont live in the city and you are looking from the outside in

That's the kind of attitude that gets a lot of people killed in a disaster.

You don't complain about how hard it is. You work it out. 2,000 school buses coming from the metropolitan area would have sufficed. And send them upstate to school gyms.

Even if they don't have bedding or much food, they're safe until FEMA can truck in supplies.

That isn't that difficult to work out - if you give a damn.

They were in Houma, on a shrimping boat, tied up to a pier tight with multiple other boats. Almost formed a barge. Probably saved their lives.
