Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Agreed, I have offered my apology for the misunderstanding twice already.

Too bad they weren't that industrious when they needed to figure out how to leave.

BTW, that is NOT looting to live, IMO.

That isn't the kind of network they are, and they have never made any secret of it.

Plus, it's not like this is happening in Aruba or anything.

I used to live in the Swiss Chalet Apartments. Back when I lived there is was a very nice, quiet area. I still remember walking into La Rosa's Deli and how wonderful it smelled! Sorry to hear that my old neighborhood has gone so downhill. I still hope to come back and visit one of these days. Take in a game. Get some Skyline Chili; go to Graeter's.

You would think they had a pre-storm plan to evac their reporters since they were hyping this as the BIG ONE. Either that, or the reporters signed a BIG Release form.

I think she cut her off because she mentioned looting and GUNS and BULLETS and she is alone.

I heard that lady.

[Gun & bullets are real necessities to LOOT.] (/sarcasm)

Might I suggest we all send in e-mails to Fox so they get the message on how much they suck?

the Times picyune had a lengthy article on what could happen with a significant hurricane, and evacuation was discussed. One problem with using school buses was there were not enough and not enough drivers...obviously more planning could have been taken but wasn't it was not like this disaster was not thought about before hand.

lengthy article here : "WASHING AWAY":

Well, I think the engineer said the dome is at "a lower" point. But your observation stands, of course.

As has been said above, the Mayor's plan seems to have been "it will turn."

The superdome is between the sea level and 6 foot high topo lines on the map I looked at.

But in a Tsunami, how much warning are you going to get, an hour, if you're lucky.

With a hurricane, you can have days to evacuate.

I've found CNN to have much better coverage than the other two stations.

Never thought I'd say it but I agree. Actually Fox comes in last at this point. CNN at least knows there is a huge story here. They were the first to get somebody on the ground in Gulfport. Fox has people in NO and still can't find the story.

I think some folks are getting too hung up on the predictions about the track of the storm. The track of the storm isn't the issue here (since New Orleans was "spared" the brunt of the storm itself). The real problem is the flooding -- which would have been a concern as long as the hurricane tracked through any large portion of the Mississippi River watershed.

We may not have even seen the worst of it. With the remnants of the hurricane making her way up along the west side of the Appalachian Mountains through Ohio, the storm run-off will be making its way down the Mississippi for days.

"WDSU reported an hour or so ago that Tulane Medical Center was going to be moving patients to the Superdome."

That doesn't make sense; the situation in the Dome is rapidly deteriorating, and they are trying to get the people out who are already there.
