Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Bush has assigned a 3-star general to the area and made the zone a military operation. They will take over search+rescue, airlifting, MASH units and tent cities if necessary. Will be formally announce this afternoon and National Guard Units (more) are being sent now.

Water "pouring in" through the breaches in the levee.

Video of people standing at top of steps of courthouse. Cars floating on steps, under water--(quote):"they may have driven there to escape the rising water".

FEMA: "It's a catastrophic event. We're sending more doctors to the area."

Patients being moved to Superdome. Snakes, fire ants, debris, chemicals in water.

Someone suggested starting separate threads earlier, one for each state----sounds like a good plan.

I agree with you on that, MFH; and I also pretty much quit watching FOX a couple years ago, too...every month since then, it's gotten less and less of my viewership...now, it's only down to weekday a.m.'s for about an hour, and Brit Hume.

Howlin,

Ah, you and Diddle E. Squat already covered what I just posted, with more pithy language (which I agree with, btw, it's pure Bovine Scatology that they didn't know they were going to be hit till Sunday.)

Just one correction..model run times are based on when the last data input came in.

The 12Z models from Friday had their last data input from 8AM Eastern time Friday..the models BEGIN running on their supercomputers right after 8AM, and take 4-6 hours to "run"...the model tracks showing the big shift west in the track were avaliable to see from 12PM to 2PM on Friday (and I began posting about them then) and the NHC track shift incorporating the new info came out at 5PM. They had to wait to see if it was a model "hiccup" so the full final shift by NHC wasn't until the 11PM Advisory on Friday.

"Nobody was stuck. Tourists could have gotten cars to leave, could have gotten a plane before the airport closed, could have gone into the superdome. If they had legs and a brain then they could have walked from the Quarter to the dome."

Wrong. There simply weren't enough airline flights and rental cars to meet demand. Also, some people didn't have the money for those things.

Interesting you mentioned the Tsunami. 250,000 people died in that one, due to lack of warning. Things could
be much worse in NO, relatively speaking.

OOPSIE---I guess it is a good thing I wasn't here for that discussion..LOL

My very first instinct when seeing the footage, was "Dang---those poor people just have to get what is available"...then I found out they stole it, and police just WATCHED, and I became angry...

Angry because they had been warned about the Hurricane, and should have stocked up if they were gonna stay...and if not, at least make an attempt to PAY for it...

NOw, I am wondering if, since I am not living that nightmare, I would do that...and the answer is NO.

HOwever, I am going to refrain from being judgemental since I am NOT in their position.

We knew on Friday. Louisiana reacted on Sunday.

That's quite correct. As Howlin pointed out their only plan, it seems, was "It will turn."

There have been several mentions of the declaration of Martial Law in New Orleans; has anyone been able to find a link to that report online? I've been searching, with no joy.

Local reporter who is in NO reported it. That reporter is in a building with water rising. She sounds numb. I wish they would get her out of there. The local news anchors are talking to her on the phone and they look like they are on a suicide hotline, you can tell they are afraid for her.

I saw that clip on CNN and it made me cry, too. I couldn't understand what Harvey Jackson said when the reporter asked him his wife's name. It made me wish that someone would send a helicopter just for him and his grandchildren and airlift him to the most luxurious hotel in New York City, not that it would alleviate the loss of his spouse. I hope they find her.

Doesn't sound like he ever left. I have gone to streaming video on my computer and turned off TV coverage from the MSM and I count Fox part of that. I cannot take their breaking news which just repeats everything either.

Perhaps Shep Smith and Phil Keating on Fox News yesterday said that "New Orleans dodged a bullet" because they did. I'm pretty sure they were referring to hurricane Katrina herself, and where her "eye" went through the area. Instead of hitting them directly, she veered off to the east a bit. That would be dodging a bullet, IMO.

None of us could have known for sure what the aftermath would be like, as we witnessed last night and this morning. Prayers for all. chena

From what I have heard, water is rising in downtown and the French Quarter. Once the water is more than knee-deep, it'll be too dangerous to wade through it.

WWL experts say the Superdome is at risk of flooding. Good Lord...

I just heard WWL say the Superdome is at the low point? Why on earth did they evacuate people to the lowest available elevation?!
