Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

I don't know what you all are getting by way of national news reporting. We're listening to the local news (courtesy of the generator) and have heard a lot of disturbing news for the New Orleans area.
The top floor to a Days Inn hotel in Slidell is missing. The entire floor. There's no word if anyone was in the hotel waiting out the storm.
One reporter said there were bodies floating in the flood waters in Slidell. (For those who aren't familiar with the area, Slidell is essentially a suburb to the east of New Orleans, so they would have had some pretty bad winds.) I am very very much hoping this is a gross exaggeration, but they sounded pretty firm about it.
The Mayor of Kenner (a suburb to the west of New Orleans) just stated that 100% of the homes in Kenner were either flooded or had structural damage and he didn't expect people to get back into the area for two or more weeks.
All of the New Orleans areas are now under a "boil water" alert -- the water is now contaminated and not safe to drink. One of the news anchors said you have to boil it for twelve minutes to be safe. Of course, without electricity, that gets complicated, unless people have propane.

The Cape Verde season hasn't been that pronounced - looks like steady wind sheer almost to the Leewards that inhibits development. However, also note that TD10 dissapated in almost the exact area that TD13 dissapated - but the disturbance held together enough so that it joined with another disturbance in the Bahamas and became TD12. Which in turn became Katrina.

Then again, maybe it will float up river to the Biscuits' field, and we could go ride on it!
TD 13 is having no luck getting together. There is a new wave behind it that looks pretty good, but they are both at least 7-12 days away, and most of the Atlantic is not conducive for strengthening storms. The short term threats will remain the 'home grown' storm, that pops in the Caribbean or GOM....
Actually, TD 13 sort of fell apart...too much shear.
There's an INVEST 91L which should be a Tropical Depression soon; it's SW of the Cape Verde Islands, a long way away.

It sounds like the water got high enough to break the ship lose.
In Mobile an Oil Drilling Platform has struck the US-98 bridge. The HWY is closed until they can assess damage to the bridge. They also said they have no idea where the Oil Rig came from.
I agree heck dont these correspondents even access the nola.com site. I seems horrible in parts of NOLA.
According to my friend Chris who lives in Hialeah, they were still without power as of Sunday (last time I spoke with him). No rioting or looting, as happenned in Homestead after Andrew.
Fortunately, this is a report that should be fairly easily confirmed without much effort, so I won't stay up tonight fretting about it like I did the fate of New Orleans last night.
I'm more concerned about blam's condition than that of the mighty battleship which possibly shifted a few feet (if I had to guess).
Not good news from Slidell. I remember that Days Inn. A whole floor. Wow.
(My brother used to live there, and I think his step-daughter, who evacuated to Houston where he lives, has a home there, so I am paying attention.)

Yeah, I was looking at the wave behind 13, but it is quite a long way off.
The Hurricane is the only thing that they've done all day, and there is nothing new to report. Brit Hume isn't a weather man. If there is anything new, they'll break in. And I'm sure they'll cover it plenty tonight.
Add the tornado warnings. Even if just 10 percent materialized (touched down and did damage), there could be some real problems.
