Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Glad ya'll are ok. I remember having a tornado pass just a mile to the north when I lived in Vinings.
This is a breach that began Monday morning, but something made it worse in the last 3 hours (pump failures?) Looks like all of NOLA will eventually flood now to the current level of the lake.
The Sacrament River Delta system sprung a huge leak last year....apparently there are all kinds of holes in the levees from golphers or pilchucks or other critters....

The mood was like it is here now... a sense that something REALLY BAD is happening but flipping channels one gets the impression that "there is nothing to see here just move along".
Maybe the mayor misspoke and meant that 80% of the city is below sea level, not underwater. That makes it a reminder of the difficulty of the situation, not breaking news, and can explain the nonchalant way in which he said it.
my hubby has been with the Army Corps of Engineers from 30+ years. He said something about this earlier today that this could happen so if he has thought about it others have also.
flow will make a breach enlarge, as will water saturation.
rule one of earth dikes: once you have a breach, you are screwn for as long as the dammed water is at or above the breach's level.

Those people won't be leaving the Dome .. it's possible they may be bringing more people to the Dome for all flooding that's going to be worsening as the minutes tick by.

The damage from surge to the east of NO is very similar to that of the tsunami. In the city itself, it's a slower flood... but, will likely end up being just as catastrophic as the main event.
I've had no luck with the WWL live feed this evening. I saved the URL from the mayor's interview (which I posted on this thread) and it's still working for now, but I think their site is getting overloaded.

There is no way the people in the super dome are going to drown. The water cannot get anywhere near the top of the dome.

Someone reporting from the Dome earlier said the natives were getting very restless inside, and that they were leaving some outside to walk around for a while or have a cigarette in order to alleviate some of the tension. Something tells me very shortly these people are no longer going to be happy campers, and it's a good thing there are lots of Nat'l Guard over there to try to keep the tamp down on the situation. Good luck to them.
