Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Was just about to reply to you there (the breaking thread) and say wasn't it sad that he's the best we've got.......that says volumes about the coverage (and lack of) elsewhere!
Surely the other stations keep an eye on one another...I'm surprise someone hasn't popped up with something on another station yet (although maybe since we've all given up on them and are watching CNN they have and we just don't know it!)...
This definitely could be huge if it's all accurate as she heard. And the urgency in her voice towards the end of the call seemed pretty real to me.
I wonder what all those people at all those comptuers in the background are doing. Definatly not checking out sources that bloggers and other know about it.
Thanks.
She IS in downtown .. in the heart of the business district of New Orleans .. and there's not 6 ft. of water downtown. So, how come no one else is reporting this? That means it's going into the FQ too.
Here is what they predicted for flooding....
pretty close

How would they get the people out of the dome - I think it would be better to move them to buildings where helicopters can air lift them out from the roofs if needed. You cannot do that from the dome I don't think - but I could be wrong.
Well if the breach is 14+ hours old, it might be the only one.
Does that mean Ole Shep Smith might get his dainty butt wet.
I've walked all that area many times and didn't realize or think that the French Quarter was higher than Canal Street.
bad idea just hit me:
what if the flooding from Ponchartrain causes a breach in the river levee... just as floodwaters from upriver hit peak?
Thanks for the info. Fast moving thread when doing research!
I'm wondering if the networks and all have been keeping quiet so as not to cause great panic for people watching.
Hope I'm wrong.
I heard it was 2 blocks. I heard the phone call, but I don't understand why there hasn't been an official report from the mayor or someone. Is there any official word that the waters have breached the levee? I've been watching the local news online and they've been playing repeats of videos shot during the day. You'd think this would be a 'FOX News Alert' situation if there ever was one.
No, the networks are clueless....they wont update til morning time....
I have yet to see a chopper that can lift a Caterpillar D7, which is the least they'd need for this.
The Corps' heavy gear is stuck on the other side of the I-10 breaks.
CNN IS GOING TO REPLAY THE INTERVIEW WITH THE V.P. OF TULANE AFTER THE BREAK.
I just cant believe this hasnt been noticed you know by waking up Mr Shepard from his hotel in the quarter gosh the Royal SOnesta is practically there isnt it.
I have NO doubt that every resource that FEMA can muster is being brought to this area in droves .. and as quickly as possible. The problem is the water .. they can't get in there with all their equipment and people with the water. And now there's another water tragedy occurring right now compounding the horrors. Their first priority HAS to be saving lives .. and I'm sure that's what's happening .. and removing the dead floating bodies. This is truly hell on earth right now.
There appears to be a big deck surrounding the Superdome, a good ways above street level.
