Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

this is the canal....not sure the cross street
Monday MORNING?
Okay, explain that.
And I do mean in Romper Room terms I can understand.
it is Sportsmans Paradise
It's probably been opening since then.
I found Tulane Hospital on Google maps - is that it?
I'm in Water Valley, Dad is in Jayess. I also have family in Pascagoula, Monticello, Vicksburg, and Prentiss. No commo from any. I've been trying most of the day to no avail. Going to be a(nother) long night, that's for sure.
Some wind up here today, lot's of rain. Limbs everywhere in the yard, ect.
Boy, I really need to read up on levees.
KAC-
latest info:
the lake levee has failed at the Orleans/Jefferson border.
Water rising 1foot/hour in the CBD
That water is almost downtown....she said Tulane Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center....that is along the trolley line.....
Tulane is just off Canal really and not to far from Poydrous its a major street that borders for all practical purposes the French Quarter. Find royal it runs right into it
And what's strange is now after commercial break on CNN Rick Sanchez is going on to another topic!
Surely two hospitals air lifting patients and white caps on Canal deserve more time! Why change topics? Frustrating.....
Either A) Blow a hole in a levee on the other side of the river, giving the water somewhere else to go, preferably where it will do less damage, or
B) FIgure out where the water is going and blow part of a levee to let the water *out*.
Both are viable techniques used on Old Man River over the years.
Is that the same one as 17th & Canal?

Canal street is the 4th street northeast of the Superdome. Tulane U. hospital is 3 blocks north of the Superdome, with city hall in between, and other medical buildings. But it looks to be several stories tall, so not sure why they would have to evacuate the entire hospital. Also the elevation there is shown to be between 0 and 5', so the flooding shouldn't get real deep there, no more than whatever level the lake is, so if the area in front of the hospital is flooded, from a lake breach at the other end of the city, then the rest of the city should already be flooded about as much as it is going to. Further, Canal Street descends from the hospital towards the lake, so if water is cascading down the street, then it is coming from a breach in the Miss. River levee. Or the call was a hoax? Something is kinda odd, unless I'm missing something. Maybe she was talking about hearing that water was running down Canal St. at the lake end?
They will need to breech another area of the canal or lake to stop this or to slow it down. This means they will have to flood another area on purpose by blowing up another part of the levee. But where would they break it at and could they do it in time? There is no way to fix this current 2 block break in the levee.
its the 17th street canal....
Not when they can't get anyone there to film it, I suppose.
that sounds like burning down San Francisco to save it.
