Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

wow...they are saying one county in MS may have lost at least 50 people.
Incredible.
I was saying NO dodged the bullet earlier, but if it is true that over half the city is under water, I am probably going to have to reassess that idea...there may be around 50 dead in NO if the flooding is that bad (didn't seem that way earlier today).
I wouldn't bet against you! :)
To presume that everyone who doesn't know this fact is dumb is.......well.......dumb.
(btw, I turned 56 Saturday).
Dear God.
Good for California.
All states should be doing the same, if they are not already.
Per emergency official, at least 50 deaths in Harrison County.
What is THAT supposed to mean?
I heard 20,000 people stayed behind in Harrison County MS, where these 50 have been reported. Sounds to me that the 50 might double or triple or even worse by the times its all over.
After watching the roof & attic rescues in N.O., and hearing how fast the water came up, and seeing how deep some of the houses are . . . there's got to be folks trapped inside some of those houses that didn't find a way to break through the roof . . . they've got to go systematically house to house to make sure there's not anyone still trapped inside up in the rafters . . . hundreds and hundreds of houses like that on the aerial videos, water right up to the rooftops . . .

I was hoping the first big report wasn't going to come.
Harrison County is Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach, and Pass Christian, most of the population of the hardest hit area of MS. The local news here in TX showed some video from Gulfport, and most of the buildings fronting the Gulf that weren't massive were pretty much flattened. So perhaps this count of 50 has gotten most of the victims in the most populated areas of MS, and possibly might not go up much more. One can hope.
That is such sad news. I will be praying for their families.
First of many, I'm afraid.
This is why Haley Barbour has been so distressed all day.
^5 about sunny and her justifications!
