Mayor: 200 trapped on Ninth Ward rooftops; bodies floating in Bywater

Mayor Ray Nagin said that 200 people were stranded on rooftops in the Lower Ninth Ward and several “bodies are floating in the water” in the Bywater neighborhood and in Eastover.

Nagin made the announcement in his first press briefing after Hurricane Katrina slammed just east of the city, but did plenty of devastation to New Orleans.

Nagin said that the 200 stranded people included 20 police officers who were riding out the storm at their homes in preparation to take over shifts from other officers. He said that boats would be dispatched on rescue missions later in the afternoon.

Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water.

Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage.

That's ridiculous. I filled up yesterday afternoon but forgot my daughter's car and figured I was going to have to pay more. Was shocked when I took the car to Albertson's and it was one cent less than I paid yesterday.

Nor does it exist to prevent me from making poor decisions.

You're right that most Americans are socialists. You might have wrongly, however, assumed that FReepers are not. There are few conservatives here, my FRiend.

People get stupid when there's a safety net to catch them. Many people got stupid in NO.

And btw, nobody stays during the storm because they are afraid they won't be allowed back to their home. They stay because its there home.

Uh, not according to some of the people I've known in the path of hurricanes (North Carolina, for example). In fact, you sometimes hear this on the news of small TV stations when they interview those who stay behind.

I happen to believe you're just here to stir up trouble.

Conservative viewpoint not welcome here, eh?

The Superdome was set up as a "refuge of last resort", but the roof almost collapsed completely...

Wow! That's the first I've heard this... So they've concluded that the engineers were WRONG??? What's the source of this? Last I heard was that the minor damage to the Superdome was to the roof cover and not the structure, and it was not unexpected and that the engineers there to monitor conditions didn't find it close to being a problem.

More examples of why the Libertarian Party only manages to garner a tiny, tiny percentage of votes in ANY election.

You guys actually have a few good ideas. Too bad you constantly come off like crackpot/horses rear-ends to get anyone to stop and listen to them.

how can you blame Bush for decisions made in the 60s?

May we assume that's a rhetorical question?

The electricity out, right? A reporter just told people on tv to get to their roofs so they can be noticed and rescued. ???

The roof cover almost collapsed completely, which would have exposed everyone inside to the elements.

That was news to me...and I thought that there's shelter beneath the seating area, at concession areas, etc. But I've never been there.

Who is contradicting the engineers who were monitoring it? Or are you saying that we almost had a bigger storm than this? (I don't disagree with that assessment! New Orleans, while hit HARD, was fortunate that it wasn't worse.)

"I like to see which celebrities are going to have concerts for these people."

We have had several country singers here in Pensacola donating their concert proceeds to 'Rebuild Northwest Florida.'

No restaurant..the Gretna COURT HOUSE! On Huey P Long, by the river, in Gretna. It doesn't sound good for my house in nearby Terrytown.

Hah, thought most wouldn't remember the attempt to do that during Georges to the West Bank. The engineers would've been shot by the local residents if they tried. That's why they backed off. We'll see shortly if anyone heard anything remotely like an explosion. If so, there will be H3ll to pay. Wait till tomorrow to grasp the destruction that NO carried to its grave. I don't want to sound grim, but given the circumstances, the likelihood of anything positive is doubtful.
Look for more info tomorrow.

BC out.
