Thanks for the info.
I saw earlier on FNC a blob of activity that was surrounding Hattiesburg, but I don't believe Katrina had even gotten there yet.
I'll definitely have my dad check on his sisters tonight (he's the baby of the family - lol (actually I'm tearing up)). One aunt has a kid and family in TN, but I'm not sure if they're out of the woods.
FNC is fairly general on the storm, and I'm in UT.
Thanks again.
Look at the work Spiff has done! Isn't it wonderful?
The Red Cross lied about the donations they collected "for 9/11 victims". They were spending much of it on their "general purposes" until Congress ordered them to use all the money they had collected by appealing for help for 9/11 victims, directly to those victims. That was the last time I'll ever give to the Red Cross. There are plenty of honest charities out there.
The other question is how much did the cyclic timing of eyewall replacement as it related to landfall have to do with the fact that the storm dropped in intensity? If the storm had been "off-cycle" by three or four hours and not yet ready to replace eyewall, would it have remained a "5"?
The key for meteorologists is to understand, as well as they can, what caused the erosion from a "5" to a "4"? The same thing with the jog east.
Interestingly, the old B&W movie w/ Charles Laughton highlights his motivation - that he was the offspring of a gypsy and a convict, and his self respect and self image are completely bound up in the absolute enforcement of the letter of the law - justice without mercy.
Of course, in a natural disaster, justice w/o mercy is probably what's needed, at least in the first few days. It's too hard, especially in the absence of enough effective law enforcement, to tell the "scavengers" from the "looters". Better to get to the shelter and get a couple of MREs than get shot hooking a couple jars of peanut butter out of somebody's general store.
It IS impressive.
That'll buff right out, I'm sure....
Thanks, trying to figure out if family's home is completely flooded.
Folks have no idea what is before them, it won't be for another day or two before the extent of the damage is shown. It's just beginning.
Isn't Jesus a special case? Really, now.
Some things are more precious than life, including ideals. Is violating the Commandment "Thou Shalt Not Steal" lesser in precendence than saving a life?
Rights are useless without life. I believe the very definition of an "idealogue" is someone who believes his ideals and principles are more valuable than an actual human life expiring in front of him.
Maybe you would let someone die rather than "steal" medicine for them during an emergency, but I would not.
Just for hoots...what would you say if two people in the pharmacist's family died because those medicines used to save the other person were not available? Was it wrong then?
Well, in my scenario, the pharmacist and his family were not on the premises. We can discuss how to ration supplies during an emergency, but I think a basic element of any scheme would have to admit that people actually present have a higher claim on emergency medicines than those theorhetically in need at a future time who aren't even here. The life dying here right now takes precednce.

Those were the assumptions that I saw going into those models in the first place, so I don't see why they need to be reworked--this storm didn't follow those assumptions and seemed to behave just as predicted for its path.
That link takes you directly to Mandeville. At the top of the page, just fill in the city, state, or zip code for another location.
I think a few of the dead and their families might question his "glory" today...dont bother responding I am not going further off topic...
Debris from a fallen building covers several cars in downtown New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina battered the Louisiana Coast on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005.
I'm just making a point.
My larger point in this, is that I am not sure the models note the compartmentalizatio of the levee system and how cost/benefit improvements could be made.
I also think people should be let home, with the usual be safe warnings (dont touch power lines)
Any chance you could start a thread IX?
Reading reports from anonymous posters on the forums of local media websites:
Most of East NO is under water(5 to 12ft).
Harvey/Gretna areas (I believe directly Southeast of the Superdome and Canal St.) are flooding due to pump failure(~5 feet).
Gran Isle has been cut in two.

Just heard from my dad in Lakeview. He is on Colbert Street, South of Harrison. All the cars are covered and there is about two feet of water in our house (and we are three feet elevated). He is in the attic right now with an axe, two dogs, a cat, and two birds. Our other two birds have already died. Please pray that the water stops rising. I heard the 17th street canal has been breeched.

Perhaps not surprisingly, I was watching Baton Rouge TV and listening to BR radio. Area around Plantation Coffee House is flooded (what's new?) Areas on I-10 near Metarie Road underpass is hugely flooded. A lot of vets near Transcontinental is flooded.
Not sure near my house.
