Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

I'm not willing to lay what's about to happen at Nagin's feet even if he could have been more proactive.

Be sure to come back and defend him tomorrow if there are many deaths.

Hiya PC--how are you doing?

Feeling pretty funky, but am awake with all my marbles. So I'd say it's a good evening.   :o)

We have to stop meeting on these all nighter threads...

Heh. Seems we're always bumping into one another with the large events. Who knows? Maybe we'll be on such a live thread some day when we land on the moon again...or nab Osama bin Laden.   :o)

I've not seen Bush make a delivery anywhere near as bad as this guy's. Yes Bush does make verbal stumbles from time to time, but this guy just couldn't talk.

As mentioned, one of the main reasons for not evacuating is not being allowed back in.

Not just New Orleans. I think of Plaquemine parish and some of the other parishes that they say may be completely underwater. There's a LOT of history there as well as a lot of people whose lives and belongings are in danger.

I'm not liking what I'm hearing about 65ft waves, and the possibility that 50-70% of the city could be under water by tomorrow night. I've never traveled to Louisiana, so I'm not familiar with the other communities. I wish the evacuation had started several days ago.

I really hope that this hurricane turns out to be much weaker than predicted.

I called my folks today and they had just returned from a pig roast at their church. Mom said she thought the meat was a little tough and both of us at the same time said, "Bush's fault!". My dad picked up the other line and wanted to know WHAT was Bush's fault? We all had a good laugh over that.

>>> Yes. Every time I think about it I get mad again. Those poor folks in the Dome are at risk because there was no plan to get them out of the city. It just infuriates me. <<<

+++++++

The advisories for this storm have been up for days.
I do not expect some government official to arrive in a vehicle to give me a lift. Nor do I expect them to be able to provide a lift out of town for several hundred thousand people too stupid to heed the advisories.

Be infuriated at the idiocy of the citizens. Not the officials.

Indications are that the cancer has likely returned.

Let's hope the indications are false!

Re: 'What do you want them to do? They did not have cars, could not afford an airline ticket and are not old enough to rent a car - they are just making the best out of a bad situation?

'Would you feel better if they spread panic and starting yelling "there is no hope - we're all going to die!!!" ?'

No, Jeff, I do not expect them to do as you suggest...

However, it was some 40 years ago when I was 18 and I do not think I would have just stayed around to face what these kids might face. Many young people of today seem to not have any common sense and I fear that is the story with these on FNC. I would have not stayed and giggled for the camera...

Even at my age being older than dirt with a guadcane, I would have found a way out of New Orleans...

Well, I hope so too. I would think the engineers would have been consulted before they used it. At least I would certainly hope so.

Grand Island - Grand Isle.

I expect Grand Isle to be scoured clean of all habitation. That means all houses and other man-made structures, humans and animals. and pretty much all vegetation.

My family went through Camille, I saw what happened to Ship Island and Cat Island, just as I describecd above. The only structure to survive was the fort on Ship Island and that was severely damaged and also almost covered by sand.

About a century ago my family lost everything on Dauphin Island, just as I described above. Crushed flat as a pancake or wiped clean.

Sad but true.

Prayers for those who choose to take the risk.
