Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Impending reduction in gene pool very likely by tomorrow.

One weatherman said 25 ft waves are moving in now ...

I'm sure the manager has a safe room
for Shep to stay in.

Hey! I've seen Geraldo standing in the
center of a storm next to a tree in FL,
that began to topple in front of him.

Shep should at least get to a taller building. I haven't been to Bourbon street in 25 years, but I remember some buildings neaarby with a few more floors.

"I'm gonna ping you tomorrow night so you can eat those words."

"Eat those words," as if I were bragging or something? There are people on this thread mourning as if the city is completely lost, and the storm hasn't even hit yet.

You might revel in the spookiness, but I'll bet there are quite a few reading this thread, and not posting, who are in the path of this thing... what does the excessive fear-mongering do to benefit them?

Will you "eat" your words, if this is less than an unmitigated disaster with huge loss of life?

Max Mayfield of the NWS put the fear of God into the mayor (the mayor just said so), and maybe Bush. If there is one hero in this story, among the goats, it is Mayfield. Pity neither Bush nor the mayor nor the governor reads FR, or some other source of weather news. They were all about 36-48 hours behind the curve. I suspect some political careers will end over this one.

"Again, that could have been taken care of - if they'd started yesterday and/or actually had a real, viable PLAN."

Yes it could've been taken care of BUT it's all water under the bridge now(no pun intended). Time to stop focusing on that and better to move onto plans securing the needs of the displaced who could not travel out of harms way.

The National Weather Service has issued an "inland hurricane warning" for central Mississippi, including the Jackson Metropolitan area. My husband and I just moved all of the patio furniture and potted plants off the patio and back porch per recommendations of the local radio station. It's hard to get concerned about things up here when our hearts are focused on N.O. & the Gulf Coast.

Our New Orleans office that I travel to now and then is across the parking lot from the Superdome. Stay at the Hyatt there quite a bit. It will be interesting to see just how much water actually gets there.

He could walk to the Superdome in twenty minutes. I wouldn't go in that thing.

I did check the sat on the NHC site, and there is some warming, but nothing to write home about. I just worry if somebody listens to them they will think there is some massive weakening or something, which there is not. The storm is just fluctuating and reorganizing...the outflow is expanding.

Possibly shutting down as much of the system as they can prior to getting hit.

My bet is that the superdome has a generator.

Hope it is a bigass generator.

If I lived in Louisiana, I'd be real worried. The governor and the mayor of New Orleans do not look competent. In fact, the mayor looks and sounds as if he might assume the fetal position any moment. He says the dumbest things! The governor has that deer in the headlights look. If she's a republican, I'm ashamed, but I'd bet the farm she's a dim dem.

We need to pray for those in positions of authority. The governor and the mayor. Regardless of their political affiliation and beliefs, they are in those positions and we need to ask God to give them wisdom and guidance in this time. We need to also pray for the others in authority, like police and firemen and emergency personnel. They will be making quick decisions that may save lives. So let's all pray for them; BIG TIME.

It will be a perfect example of what happens when people depend on the government for their every need. ---- It's a shame that so many in our society have no sense of self reliance or responsibility.

***

The Tree and the Reed

“WELL, little one,” said a Tree to a Reed that was growing at its foot, “why do you not plant your feet deeply in the ground, and raise your head boldly in the air as I do?”

“I am contented with my lot,” said the Reed. “I may not be so grand, but I think I am safer.”

“Safe!” sneered the Tree. “Who shall pluck me up by the roots or bow my head to the ground?” But it soon had to repent of its boasting, for a hurricane arose which tore it up from its roots, and cast it a useless log on the ground, while the little Reed, bending to the force of the wind, soon stood upright again when the storm had passed over.

That's okay...many of of us have been wondering the same thing. It sounds like the President had to light one under hers to get it done.
