Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

First time the "nosebleed seats' are gonna be the most desirable...
I would not want to be even near the roof.

I thought the same thing. First I thought it would be smart to get up high, then it dawned on me that who knows if that roof will hold? Maybe you're better off in the middle.

"Don't forget there are alot of people in remote bayous - but in looking at the latest radar, it seems likes its
going to hit well west of NO"

Current course has it pointing between Lake Charles and DeRidder, but the models all show a curve to due north over the next twelve hours.

The 1600 discussion has it crossing the intersection of I-10 and highway 11, essentially the south end of the I-10 bridge.

Well...we've done all we can. Brought mom from Gulf Shores to our home in Fairhope. My sister in Mobile is 'sheltering in place'. I must confess, we still have some boards left up from Dennis. This redneck woman leaves her Christmas lights AND hurrican boards up all year long! lol (not really..well, not the boards at least!)

Many prayers and good thoughts to those directly in Katrinas path. Stay safe!

That stinkin' mayor said last night that he wasn't sure he had the legal authority to evacuate the city.

This morning in his press conference, the woman who appeared after him admitted that the president called and pressed them to order a mandatory evacuation.

Can you imagine? I'll bet the guy would never have made the call to evac without the president calling. There is zero leadership in this thing. Zero.

Shep Smith: "Where do you go now?"

Go to the lobby of the tallest building in town. Insist on or DEMAND transport to the top. Life will be a shitstorm for a few weeks, but life WILL go on.

Mayor is telling people to bring their own food and water to the Superdome, enough to last 3 to 5 days. I don't know of any other plans...just responding to a previous post that said there were no plans to provide food to the people there.

Nagin also said they were searching everybody going in, and had confiscated quite a few interesting items people were trying to bring in. Didn't elaborate, but I surmise booze, weapons, etc.

there will be people running to the superdome if this thing plays out.

Or, perhaps, swimming.

People just love a good scary story, and there's a lot of that going on, here, and particularly with the news media, who stand to gain ratings by exaggerating the threat, IMHO.

For the most part, I agree.

However, I think that Hurricane Katrina is the exception.

We're all scared, but in times of disaster and terror we need cool heads. Frankly, I'm a little concerned about the response of the American people if/when we get hit with a major terror attack. If that happens, I want you on my team. :>) TMG (fellow Texan)

The mayor seems incredibly subdued to me. Either he is on antidepressants or he is one incredibly cool customer.

They switched to the Superdome and interviewed a National Guard major. he seemed very upbeat and calm. He didn't appear nervous at all.

My husband is an architect (MIT trained), and not an engineer.

He is worried about the force of the wind lifting off the roof. He made me do a google search to see exactly what the construction of the roof was... (reinforced concrete).

He says that the shape of the roof makes it function much like an airplane wing, and that the wind will tend to "lift" it. He believes that the weak point will be the bolts holding the roof to the walls. Even if it doesn't come off, if it vibrates under the stresses, some of the panels might come loose and fall in, but without drawings of the structural details, he can't state anything definitively

Engineers, he says, try to balance very carefully the cost of the safety against the probablilies... a lot depends on where that fine line is drawn in this case. Then, he says, a lot of what the engineers have designed safety-wise will be for naught if the contractors cheat or cut costs.

There are too many factors in play to feel confident that the Superdome is safe, and we will be praying throughout the storm for the people taking shelter there.
