Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Last year they dodged one just about this big. You'd think that would get their attention.

...."As far as food goes, it's a fact that healthy people can survive two to three weeks without any food at all..."

These NO'ers have survived the dreadful SAINTS all these years, they'll weather Katrina. Good luck, all!

I suspect if NO survives this storm, there is going to be a call for a new election for mayor.

Criminals. NO has a lot of street crime. And I understand the authorities are searching people sheltering in the dome for concealed weapons.

the hotel where Shep is staying has one very unique feature for New Orleans .. its basement is dub oug (as I recall, there's a restaurant/night club below), so that, in essence adds another floor to that hotel... but you couldn't PAY me to be in NO right now, and I am a true NO lover (crime notwithstanding)

Actually, the reason buildings 'explode' during a tornado or high winds, is that the AIR PRESSURE on the outside of the structure is much LOWER than the air pressure on the inside of the structure.

Once the pressure differential between the inside and outside gets too much, the INSIDE AIR PRESSURE pushes the walls and roof OUT. The gas (air) inside has to expand to fill the LOWER PRESSURE OUTSIDE the structure.

If the winds blow hard enough on the Superdome structure and create extremely LOW PRESSURE zones, like wings on a plane create low pressure on the wing and cause it to lift UP, then the SuperDome structure will also create LIFT into the low pressure zone as the internal air pressure (under the wing-roof-walls) reacts to the lift...poof, one dome opens up like a JiffyPop!!

Where do you rank him on the Chief Moose scale ???

He's about two Mooses higher than Chief Moose. Plus he's a bit more photogenic than Chief Moose.

I wasn't going to mention it. But it's out there and it's coming.

First things first, though.

My wife's cousin lives in New Orleans and he told me this afternoon that he's not leaving. I pleaded with him, but he said it was too late (probably true) and that the levees have been improved.

At this point, I just want to wake up and discover that this was all a bad dream.
