Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I thought he said that. It was in the context of a discussion about refugees in the Dome. But Amelia thinks he was referring to people staying in their homes.

I do hope she's right and that I heard wrong.. The very thought of people climbing onto the roof of the dome to escape water is horrible.

I also hope people aren't staying in their homes armed with axes.

Des Moines Iowa had a terrible flood back in '92 or '93.

What was it about Des Moines that incurred God's wrath?

Wow, really? I lived north of Little Rock for a couple of years, and absolutely loved it, especially the fall foliage. But seared into my memory were the long, long stretches of freeway to Texas and Memphis that were coned off to a single lane, with endless number of squares cut out of the other lane, seemingly never completed.

I heard that on the radio this afternoon. I heard him say "hammers" so they could break their way into the floor above as the water rose. I didn't know it was the NO mayor speaking.

Governor of LA on Fox now.
We have done a magnificent job of evacuating.

Then, out of the other corner of her mouth she did have the wisdom to ask the nation to pray. Unfortunately her incompetence is inexcusable, but her plea for prayer is what I will focus on now.

Glad to hear your folks are safe.

I've been helping my parents prepare via long distance.
I think it will be worse than Camille where they are.
In my conversations with my mother, I did find that everyone I know on the coast headed north.
I don't know if they headed far enough north, though.

I hope all you get is rain, and NO tornadoes!

Destroyed is destroyed, I agree.

I was referring to a discussion Jeffers and I were having on whether the difference in increase in wind force is the square of the wind velocity difference or the cube. Now we have the newspaper citing unnamed scientists that it is 500 or a 1000 fold.

But don't attribute me with the 500 to a 1000 fold group. I am sticking with the square. So if Miami had 77 mph, then this storm at 154 (just for scientific purposes) is double, which is four times the force.

You must not have been to New Orleans after dark before......

Not outside certain areas of the quarter I haven't, but I've been warned there are boundries you do not cross after dark.

Still, a real handy to have in a situation like this *tool*, like a Leatherman, would be okay with me, but the authorities would nix it.

Seems like they forgot their own evacuation timetable:

Beginning 50 hours in advance, evacuations south of New Orleans would be ordered, public offices and schools would be closed, but traffic would remain along normal routes.

At 40 hours, evacuation south of the Mississippi River, including the West Bank of New Orleans, would be ordered.

In Phase 3, if the storm is a category 3 storm or higher, contraflow would be triggered.
