Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I'd love to see some of those ancient buildings. It's amazing what they were able to build without computers and modern machinery.

I'm staying positive, I the engineers must have designed the Dome to hold at 200MPH, but I don't think they ever envisioned a direct Category 5 strike with 190MPH gusts.
Unlikely; the force exerted wind follows a sqare law effect - quadruple the wind spped and the force is = 42 or sixteen times greater ...

Sorry, was fooled by Whoraldo's trademark grossly hyper-emotional, Nielson grabbing dramatic delivery.

I like watching Geraldo too! I still wish he was down in NO out in the wind and rain. It cracks me up when the reporters do that.

Well, people don't carry that much stuff into a game unlike today. So there's a lot less to check for boooze and guns. Also, I'd guess that at a game you have a lot more employees available to man every entrance while today it's just the cops and Guard (and I guess city workers). Gate workers at a game also have a lot of experience at getting people in quickly since they do it so often.

Ah, I missed seeing that. I was just going by what the FEMA chap said. He specifically mentioned that they'd received 15,000 MREs to feed the folks.

Early this morning, I believe it was FOXNews I heard report New Orleans was under mandatory evacuation, but soon after that, I flipped to The Weather channel, and their anchor said the Mayor was about to announce a mandatory evacuation.

When the big blow is over, when the blame game starts, the Mayor will blame all problems on anyone and everyone but himself and his administration.

I heard yesterday that he was called by the Director (I believe it was) of the National Weather Service to really explain how serious the situation was and that they thought he should start evacuations of NO.  Later in the evening I heard him asked about that by WWL  he danced all around it and finally  said he would make the decision about mandatory evacuations early in the morning.  He couldn't have been warned any better than that.
