Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

They also went out when the eye passed over thinking it was the end. They got caught when the other side came in.

If you ever get a chance to see the documentary about this don't miss it. It's facinating, not the least of which is the weatherman who lied to cover his rear end after it was over.

Agreed. Gov Blanko draws a blank on so many things but this will be her legacy.

FNC reporter is very wary about how the Superdome will fare.

What concerns me is how overconfident officals have been in descibing the Superdome, using the same supurlatives that were used about the "unsinkable" Titanic.

Pray that it does not become a giant death crater.

Hurricanes are a double edge sword - the demand for fuel will plummet while all the roads are blocked by flooded newscast vans.

Thanks, I needed that laugh.

FYI,...KLIF radio in D/FW is playing Fox TV over their radio station, for anyone planning on driving, or looking for a Fox streaming audio.

I'd swear Fox news is reading this thread. Samadams asks why nobody is broadcasting from inside the superdome. 3 minutes later Laurie asks the guy if he is going to broadcast from inside the superdome.....

Just listened to Jeff's report from outside the Superdome on FOX... he is nervous... said he's ridden out a lot of storms, but this one feels different... I'm worried about Shep down in the French Quarter, too.

"Husband doesn't know what those do, structurally. It is why he wants an inside view of the structure to see what is doing what..."

I don't know what they do structurally either, but it's a safe bet they transfer lateral load to either the main roof or the sidewall below the parapet. Either way, it doesn't matter as much where they transfer the load as the dimensions of the struts themselves. They look pretty skinny, more like tensile members and not compression worthy.

Like another poster wrote:

"Above 175 mph, all bets are off." You pick your hole as best you can and move if you have to. A lot of people repositioned during the storm's peak in Galveston and survived to tell about it. I don't know how, but all that matters is that they did. Many of them had to swim for it too.

Thanks Peach. I have tried to bring everything that could be a projectile indoors, save for the two St. Francis statues. We've moved the rocking chairs and tables indoors and we even took down the swings on the balconies. Trouble is, the house painters have their damn scaffolding all over the place. I think they'll be here in time to move it tomorrow morning.

Much better to scare them instead of bury them. I still can't imagine again going through the one I went through in the open ocean in a small sailboat. I think I have shut a lot of that one out.

""Supertankers cannot deliver cargo at NYC or LA? ""

"I find that VERY hard to believe"

Now way in NY - even modest size container ships have to offload some before they come to NY - lots of shoaling.
