Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I've just completed all preperations and will evacuate about 30 miles inland to my brother's house in a short while.

Good to hear of this, and may you have a safe journey. When you have time, do send us an update.

you got me there. I don't know the answer to that.

While I am sure there is part of the reserve in the area, I would think Texas is a more logical choice.....

Might be a chance it will go slightly west of the very worst possible land fall location.

But doesn't that put New Orleans in the upper right quadrant (worst part for winds)?

The girl on WDSU just said the mayor didn't declare a mandatory evacuation till after noon because they didn't have a place for the people who couldn't evacuate so they had to open the dome , origonally it was to be a special needs shelter but is now open to all.

Grump that I am, and always have been, I would say none.

Perhaps England or Oz will shame Canada, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Just out of curiosity, why are there no news reports from INSIDE the Superdome? Are the authorities not allowing the news crews inside?

That's a good question.....

Really, it's unknown. I'd like to say otherwise, but nobody knows, unless the designer is still alive and will post to FR.

However, I think the chances are pretty good that the SuperDome will survive more or less intact. It was a monumental-class structure designed in the Cold War/Civil Defense era. Despite all the disclaimers about it not being intended as a shelter, I would not be surprised if the architects didn't have that exact usage in mind as a secondary or tertiary usage. I'm really not at all worried about the structure standing up to the winds.

What I *am* worried about is the prospect of a nearby tall building falling on it (possible, unlikely) or floodwaters undermining the foundation (possible, I don't know how likely this is an issue).

As for it being a deathtrap - if you're stuck in NO and can't get out, the SuperDome is by far the strongest building in NO. It's the best shot people have, IMHO.

Yup. That Superdome situation gives me the heevie-geevies.

What country will be the first to offer us aid to help the people of New Orleans and other storm damaged areas?

Maybe Hillary could work some more of her magic with cattle futures... ;-)

They are, after all, fellow DEMS in the Big Easy.

RE: Laurie's outfit--I'm with you--YUK!

I'm worried about Shep and all the other reporters out there; I thought they were sending Geraldo? Him I wouldn't mind seeing washed away, but Shep, I like. What are these reporters thinking? There's gonna be no way out for them either . . .

Supertankers cannot deliver cargo at NYC or LA?

I find that VERY hard to believe.

NYC & LA harbors are too shallow for oil tankers. Also, they do not have the oil terminals that New Orleans has.
