Live Thread - Hurricane Katrina, Part IV (Update: Now a Category 5 )
NOAA - NHC ^ | 27 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/27/2005 8:05:55 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Anyone watching the Presser from Jefferson Parish?

Yes. Terrifying. I've got pretty much everything he's saying people need to have, but it's all up here in Virginia. I wish I could teleport it to the people who need it!

WWL--reports there are no safe havens in New Orleans, people should realize that by the fact the Red Cross left years ago and has no shelters in N.O.

If the infamous Texas summer high-pressure ridge off the upper Texas coast holds and can work its way a bit farther east, it could flatten the western side of the hurricane enough to help NO. Sorry about Mississippi, though. We said prayers at church for the protection of the Gulf coast...and I said a silent prayer for the oil platforms! I can't imagine how high the oil and natural gas prices will go tomorrow. Meanwhile, CA sits blissfully hurricane and oil platform free, the selfish slackers.

Yikes! I've visited those cemetaries, and completely overlooked that prospect. Wouldn't want to have to deal with that. Praying for the folks who do.

Good morning. I heard some 'expert' on TV say that 70% of the city is below sea level. Have no idea if that is accurate, but do know that some areas are above sea level. But 5' isn't exactly comforting in a 20' storm surge.

Not sure how well this link will work, but the Terraserver has topo maps and aerial photos:

http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=15&X=977&Y=4146&W=2&qs=%7cnew+orleans%7cla%7c

Superdome is between the 0' and 5' contours, but appears to be on a raised platform. Looks like the elevation rises west toward the levee, where the convention center and related infrastructure (casino?) sit (with 16' and 19' elevation markings.) Those are probably some of their backup evacuation shelters that the mayor didn't want to name at the news conference this morning.

Here is the Sheriff saying they should have left yesterday -- no kidding! Mayor and City Council are to blame IMHO.

There were evacuation orders for people South of I-12 yesterday. An earlier poster said he had a fire truck come through his neighborhood telling them to leave. He was 10 miles North of Covington, which would be North of I-12. I really don't know what to tell you. Sorry!

I wonder what happens to the animals in the Audubon Zoo in the new "Venice"? Or how about the Aquarium of the Americas? It'll never be the same. Where are they taking the donkeys from the French Quarter?

The Mayor said he has a "cot" at the Hyatt and is riding out the storm.

He also said that NO is going to be like "Venice" for awhile, only with little "swamp critters and things like that" swimming in the water.

The Mayor must be counting on Pogo and Albert to save his *$$!

"What a maroon!" to quote the Leporid Sage.
