Let's talk about FR screen names. How did you choose yours? Do you use your real name, a nickname, a silly name, a celebrity's name, your pet's name, or some other? Funny? Or serious?

With as many registered users as FR has, we are sure to see some highly unusual monikers. The first thing I thought of when I saw this name was:

Feiny (read more about her in our 09-18-02 Finest thread), as we like to call her, resides in California, and this is how she told us her screen name came about:

"I had a tough time coming up with a screen name. I tried several & they were not available. I remembered that my other half (do not call him Mr. Sukass) had called Diane Feinstein another name…..'Feinswine'. He said that is how he & his friends used to refer to her in San Francisco. For some strange reason, Feinswine was not available…so I added suksass..and PRESTO…I was a FReeper."

Let's talk about logos. If *you* had a logo, what would it be - your name? a favorite hobby? something you collect? Would we think of you each time we see a particular item? Those of us with regular, plain screen names sometimes get a nickname chosen *for* us, and it somehow sticks. With thanks to ST.LOUIE1 (who is much better known at the Finest as *Wolfie*), "Billie" soon became "BillieBlue", with a little bluebird as my sig.

I wanted to post a Few of Our Finest' logos here, and will post more later in the thread. Please feel free to show your own, and tell us why you chose your name. :)

Above is an early logo I made for Aqua based on her name, but after getting to know her better, as a sistah and hostess at the Finest, the following one - which she chose - fits her southern personality much better.

You've been seeing this guy at the Finest for a little over three years. He usually comes up for air once or twice a day to check in with us. :)

Our Fair Lady ... God bless her loving heart - she never runs out of kisses or interesting things to say.

Even before he grew into the suave, dashing and debonair wolfie he is now (in the photo below), he was still a bit of a rake and a rogue...but every bit as irresistible! (Plus he's helped me with some of the logos for today!) :*

Let us never have to wonder what the Finest would be like without Rev. Nan. :)

Or the honorable Mayor and his purple cup and daily devotional, not to mention his devotion to our Military and bringing us Military Monday week after week.

I finally have my own logo! (and after making some for several others)...Thank you.

You are welcome. I have fun making these - you *had* to have a bicycle one! Betty Boop rides bikes and does all kinds of physical activities. LOL! Making eyes blink and changing hair color and style is easy. Dutchess in her plane was actually Mickey Mouse in a yellow plane! Just a few tiny adjustments to animate them both. :)

And I LOVE The ping idea & the pledge.. my monitor is very small, but it appears the flag is floating on a bed of flowers. The background "borders" in the table are so bright and colorful. It is fun to see what others have dug up for past year threads & the graphics used. Love your gif evoloving Billie logo. that is really neat.

The Panic of 1857

The catalyst for the Panic of 1857 was the failure on August 24, 1857 of the New York branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company. It was soon reported that the entire capital of the Trust's home office had been embezzled. What followed was one of the most severe economic crises in U.S. history.

New York bankers almost immediately put severe restrictions on even the most routine transactions. In turn, many people interpreted these restrictions as a sign of impending financial collapse and reacted with panic. Individual holders of stock and of commercial paper rushed to their brokers and eagerly made deals that "a week before they would have shunned as a ruinous sacrifice." As Harper's Weekly described the scene on the New York Stock Exchange, "…prominent stocks fell eight or ten per cent in a day, and fortunes were made and lost between ten o'clock in the morning and four of the afternoon."

The Report of the Clearinghouse Committee, produced in the years following the The Panic of 1857, found that "A financial panic has been likened to a malignant epidemic, which kills more by terror than by real disease." Yet behind the reaction of New York's bankers to the closing of a trust company lay a confluence of national and international events which heightened concern:

* The British withdrew capital from U.S. banks;
* Grain prices fell;
* Russia undersold U.S. cotton on the open market;
* Manufactured goods lay in surplus;
* Railroads overbuilt and some then defaulted on debts;
* Land schemes and projects, dependent on new rail routes, failed.

To compound the problem, the SS Central America, a sailing vessel transporting millions of dollars in gold from the new San Francisco Mint to create a reserve for eastern banks, was sunk in mid-September. As banking institutions of the day dealt in specie (gold and silver coins instead of paper money) the loss of some thirty thousand pounds of gold reverberated through the financial community. Howell Cobb, Secretary of Treasury, encouraged not only the placement of vast amounts of such government gold on the market, but also redemption of government bonds at a premium. At his suggestion President James Buchanan proposed to Congress that the Treasury be authorized to sell revenue bonds for the first time since the Mexican American War.

Football FINALLY makes sense.......... A guy took his blonde girlfriend
to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their
team's bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience.

"Oh, I really liked it," she replied, "especially the tight pants and
all the big muscles, but I just couldn't understand why they were
killing each other over 25 cents."

Dumbfounded, her date asked, "What do you mean?"

"Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the
game, all they kept screaming was: 'Get the quarterback! Get the
quarterback!' I'm like...Helloooooo? It's only 25 cents!!!!
