Democrats have decided that unless there is an unexpected development in the weeks ahead, they will not launch a major fight to block the Supreme Court nomination of John G. Roberts Jr., according to legislators, Senate aides and party strategists.
In a series of interviews in recent days, more than a dozen Democratic senators and aides who are intimately involved in deliberations about strategy said that they see no evidence that most Democratic senators are prepared to expend political capital in what is widely seen as a futile effort to derail the nomination.

I don't believe that for a minute.
I believe that they will use every sleeze tatic, lie, and smear campaign that they can. Just as they are doing now.
Which leaves us back at square one. Tell me, when do WE get to spend some political currency?
(Oh, silly me, I thought we WON in November...)
Roberts is going to be a conservative's wet dream.....wait and see.
Bush has nominated a great young mind who will lead the court.
Novak already said that there are 60 'hard' GOP votes for Roberts in the Senate.
Oh, sure. What does Ted Kennedy have planned?
Agreed.
More and more documentation has come out to demonstrate that Judge Roberts has consistently written in many contexts his understanding that the Constitution limits the powers of judges, as it does of all other government officials. It is time for Ann Coulter, and maybe even Joseph Farrah (if he's thinking this week), should write columns taking it all back.
It is time to focus on the next Supreme Court appointment, and the one or two after that. Chief Justice Rehnquist cannot physically last a year longer. Replacing him with a conservative (restrained) Justice will not cahnge the equation on the Court.
The big fight, that the last-ditch Democrats are already planning for, comes when Justice Stevens (age) and/or Jusice Ginsburg (age and cancer) retire. Replacing either of them will have profound effects on the Court's decisions.
Congressman Billybob
Yep. His enemies keep misunderestimating him. Every time one of my moron Liberal friends calls Bush stupid, or claims the real power behind the throne is Rove, I know that's another idiot who I can count on to bury the Democratic Party in the dustbin of history right next to Communism.
I absolutely agree.
Have you even seen any of Roberts writings??? He refers to Sen. Snow as a Marxist. How anyone can possibly construe this guy into being a Souter is beyond me. This guy will be BETTER than Scalia and Thomas.
i guess it is time to nominate ginsburg for chief justice and fill her position with a hardliner... then laugh at all the documents we can pull on her views...
then, replace her after she 'retires early'
teeman

This has been known since Roberts was nominated
Fingers crossed. Hope you're right...
I think it is best that they keep up the attacks. Those attacks are giving some comfort to liberals that maybe Roberts is not so bad. Their attacks are actually making it easier for Roberts to sail through.
Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. The left has put a fair amount of effort into smearing Roberts. It would seem unlikely they'd just toss all that effort, without at least getting some more smearing in on CSPAN for the hearings. This could very well be disinformation, designed to make us let down our guard.
IOW, keep your powder dry. If nothing else it may be needed for the next Supreme Court nomination, or the one after that.
But, but... Roberts provided legal advice for a mining company. OMG!
There's your "Special Circumstances" clause, right there.
It ain't over 'til it's over.
