Roberts: Dems have thrown in the towel
Washington Post ^ | 8-16-05 | Mike Allen and Dana Milbank

Democrats have decided that unless there is an unexpected development in the weeks ahead, they will not launch a major fight to block the Supreme Court nomination of John G. Roberts Jr., according to legislators, Senate aides and party strategists.

In a series of interviews in recent days, more than a dozen Democratic senators and aides who are intimately involved in deliberations about strategy said that they see no evidence that most Democratic senators are prepared to expend political capital in what is widely seen as a futile effort to derail the nomination.

But they will continue to allow radical special interest groups to malign and slander the man.

Maybe NARAL's blatant attack backfired so bad, all they could see was '06 seats going up in smoke!

And I think many will be shocked just how conservative Roberts is.

I think the documents they DID succeed in prying out of the administration only helped Judge Roberts cause.

Among us pooruneducatedandeasytocommand peasants, that is.

The NYT's fishing expedition and NARAL's attack ad have left burnt fingers all over LibLand.

Doggie..if they don't push for the "release of all documents"..then they can't make that case next time...theyr'e between a rock and a hard place...therefore.look for the Dems to vote NO as a caucus, but using the excuse that the WH didn't give them all the papers they asked for..

I also think they don't see Roberts as that big a threat, like they would someone in the Scalia/Thomas mold. They are hoping for another Souter, and the fact that Roberts has been outed as gay-friendly gives them hope. Don't ever doubt how hard and how ugly the Dems would fight if they really didn't want this guy on the bench.

He isn't in yet. Remember how close Thomas was when Nita Totenburg contrived the Anita Hill thing?

It scares me that the Libs do not see Roberts as a threat. I like the nominations that Liberals see as a threat.

Bush never gets credit for his political acumen. We, they, everyone tends to underestimate him.

That, and the fact that Dick Durbin and his aide were caught in a blatant lie to a reporter, because the guy had a conversation on tape.
