Correction Appended
CRAWFORD, Tex., Aug. 12 - This is not the place to expect a sighting of Viggo Mortensen, the star of "The Lord of the Rings." Or at least it wasn't when President Bush began his annual vacation here earlier this month.
But something has happened to Crawford over the last week. The sleepy summer air has been punctured by a blast of antiwar energy, with carloads of activists appearing every afternoon to join a vigil begun by the mother of a soldier who died in Iraq.
Flowers are delivered by the dozen at Camp Casey, as the muddy outpost established by the mother, Cindy Sheehan, near the Bush ranch is now called. White crosses have been hammered into the dirt, pink banners strewn across the trees, the police posted at bends in the road to wave gawkers along.
When Mr. Mortensen drove up the dusty lane unannounced on Thursday to huddle with Ms. Sheehan in a roadside trailer, it was just one more jarring sight in a small town accustomed to seeing mostly the reporters and buttoned-down administration officials it has come to know over the last five years.
No one has been more challenged by the round-the-clock campsite than Mr. Bush, who sped past in his motorcade for the first time on Friday and, as expected, did not stop to grant Ms. Sheehan's request for a meeting.
But even before Ms. Sheehan arrived, this sort of challenge was not entirely an unexpected one for Mr. Bush, who by the end of this summer will have spent more time away from the White House than any other president in history...

" They're going to find out that us Net veterans are more than a match for their tidal wave of lies this time, M-U. :-)"
Perhaps the perfect accidently dropping a MOAB-II.
Step away from the Zyklon-B, Sheehan...
Wow, MY bubble's burst! *cough*Who cares but a few hobbit geeks?*cough* :D
This tool Motensen told Charlie Rose Bush was the equivalent of the bad guy in LOTR. He also writes poetry. Need I say more about his incredible knowledge of international policy?
However, unlike the Viet Nam era protesters who wanted their Ho in Hanoi to win this group just wants the U.S. to be humiliated -- surely they don't hate the U.S. enough to want to live under radical Islam.
IMO they do however wish radical Islam would destroy Israel.
" It's a hippy thing, and I don't understand."
No. It is an anti-war activist thing. They are doing exactly what anti-war movement activists did during the Vietnam War.
And if you have at all researched that movement you will realize it was strongly backed by card carrying Communists.
It had nothing to do with "a hippy thing" Hippys where simply losers by birth, who took to drugs and the easy way out. Can't hack the system so drop out and be a bum. These folks are just dead set against the war. Of course it is their right as American citizens to do what they are doing.
But surely they should understand they are giving aid to the enemies of the United States by their actions. This is precisely the stuff Laden and Zarqawi types want to see happen. You can be sure they are using it in their recruitement programs to enlist new Jihadist with hope.
So their protest are aiding the enemy. Tis that simple.
Embedded fabrication.
"But then again Mortensen is just an actor."
Too true. They're not hired for their brains; they're hired because they can read lines someone else wrote.
Yes, they were the 'useful idiots' just as they were in October 1917, 1968, and today. I lack the context of the time, so they are all just old hippies to me.
I guess my point is that they are the very same idiots. They've always hated America because of their own personal problems with their daddy, or God. The WWII generation gave them everything and they didn't like it....
Their own personal pathologies make them soldiers for those who would destroy us.
I missed the whole Vietnam protesting thing, but now they are protesting and pestering me and I don't appreciate it!
"It's a hippy thing, and I don't understand."
I can't TELL you how glad many of us baby boomers are to hear this. For those of us who endured the 60s in our formative years and then grew up to become responsible adults, all of this anti-war, anti-establishment, tie-dyed, narcissistic kumbaya BS is just that - BS.
Her bus must be out of vegetable oil.
Unfortunately, for us 'Gen-Xers' that is all we ever hear about the Baby Boomers....
To add insult, they dominate my marketplace by sheer force of numbers.
Ugh... I've been through the malaise of the late seventies in my teens, yuppy angst and acquisitiveness in my twenties and Clinton and the gay 90's in my 30's.
They were my teachers, my professors, my president (Clinton).... They read the news to me and write all the newspaper articles.
Now, they think it's the '60s' all over again and give me grief for my uniform and short hair. I've been acosted in airports or bars by the same stinky old hippies who pestered Vietnam vets.
I'm sick to death of it.
" I missed the whole Vietnam protesting thing, but now they are protesting and pestering me and I don't appreciate it!"
Magnify a hundred fold what you see here, and imagine back then. They where creeping all over campuses, fueling the minds of students etc.. What you wrote is right on the money. I am glad your mind is clear on the issue. It is folks like you we will have to depend on as time goes by to carry on against so much wrong that is allowed in a free society.
So though they pester many of us, they at least have the perfect right to assemble and protest if done within the boundaries of the local, state, and federal laws. Sadly they do not have a clue it is giving aid to the enemy.
Getting late on the east coast, I gotta hit the sack, have a good evening/morning.
"Her bus must be out of vegetable oil."
Heh heh heh. Pretty good. Getting late on east coast. Gotta hit the sack.
But they don't think that far ahead. Not their department. Do whatever you want and damn the consequences is their motto. Pyrrhic victories are their lifestyle.
Thank you very much. I can reassure you that there are many, many of us just like that in places you would never guess.
So though they pester many of us, they at least have the perfect right to assemble and protest if done within the boundaries of the local, state, and federal laws.
Heck, that is what we are fighting for--as well as the right to change the channel and listen to good ol' Limbaugh when we get sick of their nonsense and want to hear something wholesome!
I can't imagine such a circus being allowed to go on for so long where I live. You'd get a permit for one day and then that's it, on your way. Why isn't someone in authority saying enough's enough?
"I'm sick to death of it."
Those grizzled stinky old hippie losers won't be around forever, and the rest of us baby boomers are just as sick of them as you are.
You guys lost, get over it.
