Republican and Democratic senators on Friday worked to set a date for U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' confirmation hearing after an agreement to start the process on Sept. 6 collapsed.
"We thought we had an arrangement and it fell through," said Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican said in a brief interview outside the Senate chamber. "We are working on it."

indeed, and you saw no attempt to change the rules for Bolton. OK, the case could be made that it isn't "worth it" for just a UN ambassador, I can accept that. but now the chips are down for Roberts, why don't they speak up?
I will reserve judgement until we see what happens in september. but in the back of my mind, I have this bad feeling that this McCain led gang has made other promises to the Dems that we don't know about.
LOL! Actually, you hit it -- Sen. Magic Bullet is the problem. If we leave it up to him, there won't be hearings until Sept. 2009.
Not a one of them has stated anything remotely comforting. Just the usual double speak. Until they actually confirm Roberts, and end the filibuster, I wouldn't trust them even if they did say without equivication they would nuke the Dems.
I have no respect for the Senate. They have not earned the benefit of the doubt.
The votes wasn't what I was talking about
We first have to get pass the hearing before votes will occur
Point being .. the Dems will delay and draw out the hearing process for as long as they can
If they did .. then they will pay the political price for it
The party voters have put up with a lot of their BS to get where we are know .. the party leaders in the Senate are walking on very thin ice and the party voters aren't going to put up with their BS any longer

He , not the Democrats should be the one who sets the agenda.
But most of us knew this before the Republicans made him the Chairman.
Did anyone else hear Chuckie Schumer and his "two strikes" speech. He is a egomaniac!!! He's a stinking senatore from ONE state, and he talks like he's the president. I can't stand how the Republicans take this crap and say NOTHING!!!
and it also makes me wonder who our politcal advisors are. I have never had much praise for Rove. where is it written that the proper political strategy is to allow the Dems to fill the TV screens with their lies, and say nothing in rebuttal? the idea that this is the way to handle a public relations campaign to support a judge, is beyond me.
our party looks at polls and says one of two things: 1) "we are ahead, don't say anything" 2) "we are behind, cave in". the Dems look at a poll and say "we're behind, let's go on offense to change the dynamics".
that's why all these people saying "its looking good for Roberts" are quite premature. there is a long way to go, and our side is already executing plan #1 above - we are silent. the judicial 527s are doing better.
the same freepers who were saying "Bolton is a lock" two months ago, are now saying the same thing about Roberts. this is why I am worried.
I hear you! I know that part of it is the media. The republicans have a much harder time getting their message out "unfiltered" HOWEVER, with Fox News and alternative medai, they can do a MUCH better job now. I think they are so afraid of being misrepresented (which they often are, I admit) that they just stay silent.
That being said...the last elections have turned our way partly because the Schumers, Daschles, et al are so obstructionist. It plays well in Washington, but not in anywhere else. But when charges and lies are left unanswered, people only remember the lies. (Think of Joe Wilson...his lies were out for quite a while, and though they have been proven as lies, it's been forgotten)

It seems to me that a recess appointment would qualifiy as finding a replacement and that is as long as it took. The point of the term of the appointment seems irrelevant.
My point is that O'Connor had no business saying what she said. She stuck her nose in the process pf the selection of the new justice, and she has no business being there.
That's true but also a little unfair. Remember the Republicans pick up 4 more seats in the 2002 elections. Estrada pulled out before that. With the RINOS 51 seats was meaningless, 55 is just a "little" better.
