It seems to me that a recess appointment would qualifiy as finding a replacement and that is as long as it took. The point of the term of the appointment seems irrelevant.
My point is that O'Connor had no business saying what she said. She stuck her nose in the process pf the selection of the new justice, and she has no business being there.
