Republican and Democratic senators on Friday worked to set a date for U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' confirmation hearing after an agreement to start the process on Sept. 6 collapsed.

"We thought we had an arrangement and it fell through," said Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican said in a brief interview outside the Senate chamber. "We are working on it."

"Leahy looked like the cat that ate the canary on the floor...he knew he won!!! I wanted to smack him.."

I'm so sick of watching the pubs run around on the senate floor like chickens with their heads cut off...sigh :(

It comes down to the President and the House.

The President has to VETO.

The House has to avoid coming up with a 2/3rd Majority to overrule. Then kick the candidates that are faux pro-Lifers out of the Party.

At least Arlen is honest that he is pro abortion. Can disagree but respect honesty. I don't respect those that try to have it both ways.

IF ANWR passes, it'll be in the budgetary bill.

Immigration, to tell the truth, I'd rather the Republicans continue ignoring. Why? Because as bad as that policy is, it's better than amnesty which is what I fear will happen this fall. Amnesty with nothing done to stop illegal immigration.

If Roberts isn't confirmed by October, several people have just lost their re-elections. Everything I give a damn about, the Reps have failed on in the Senate. They can't get at least this right, I owe them nothing.

I haven't given up on the House or W.H., but the Senate will be dead to me.

zencat said: "Next time the RNSC sends me a donation letter, it's going back with a Post-It note telling them to shove it. I'm not giving them money just to have Democrats run the Senate."

I just watched the Senate wrap up the passage of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Firearms Act. You could tell by the way the Demoncrats were behaving that they have suffered a swift kick in the face. If they obstruct the Roberts hearings, I predict another kick in the face. What fun!

As for your future donations, consider that DeWine and Chafee were the only Republicans to vote against this bill. I will be supporting any pro-gun opposition to them that appears. That would be a good place for your money.

What part of "we are the majority" do the Republicans in the Senate not understand?

ALL of it?

Isn't Fox reporting that the hearings are to start Sept 6?

have any of the "gang of 7" republicans made a simple declarative statement yet - that if Roberts is fillibustered, they will vote to change the rules? Just those simple words. any of them? any 2 of them?

until I hear that, this Roberts thing is no "done deal".

Funny, I thought we won the election and had a majority in the Senate, a majority on the Judiciary Committee and one of our guys was Chairman of the that committee. Guess I missed something along the way. Maybe what I missed was the chemo attacking Specter a little lower in the old anatomy than he planned on - a little below the belt maybe.

I'm so P.O'd right now I feel like shutting all news off for the whole weekend.

Come September .. the Dems will stall even more .. you just watch, because they don't want Roberts on the bench

The real question is .. will the pubbies continue to allow the Dems to make complete fools of them and destory the process of nomination hearings

Hey Arlen ... hope you are paying attention .. because the Dems are making a Fool out of you too!

Frist just put cloture votes on the Hawaiian Bill, and the Death Tax Bill, I think...

Anyway, it sounds like they are gonna get off to a slow start in Sept....

as I said, it would be quite easy for any of the 7 republicans in the "gang" to start saying that they will vote for a rules change if this vote is delayed. that's all they have to say. when they start saying it, we'll know we've got a win coming here. come september, if we don't start hearing them say it, we've got problems.

They aren't all on the Judicary Committee .. and first we need to get Roberts out of the hearing to vote on him
