A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....07-26 & 27-05....I Have a Rant!!

A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Got a gripe? Wanna share it? Wanna get it off your chest? Well, now's your chance...right here, right now!

I'll start...
I like the sidebar - I like seeing the titles of Breaking News, and other news, when I check My Comments. What I DON'T like is those annoying polls at the top of the sidebar! I don't like polls; I don't particularly like to vote in them, so I don't like having to check one of the little squares just to move the *latest* one to the bottom of the sidebar. Whether we have Opinion Polls on the sidebar or not should be an option *we* can choose in our Preferences. At least I think so. :(
This thread will run for two days, so go ahead; it's your turn...get on *your* soapbox! (but do watch your language!)

Cute graphic! Our skies are dark, too, dutchess, with lightning all around. I should get dinner started, and turn off *my* computer, too. Hope to be back later tonight. :)

MEMORIES

A little house with three bedrooms
and one car on the street,
A mower that you had to push
to make the grass look neat.

In the kitchen on the wall
we only had one phone,
And no need for recording things,
someone was always home.

We only had a living room
where we would congregate,
Unless it was at mealtime
in the kitchen where we ate.

We had no need for family rooms
or extra rooms to dine,
When meeting as a family
those two rooms work ed out fine.

We only had one TV set,
and channels maybe two,
But always there was one of them
with something worth the view.

For snacks we had potato chips
that tasted like a chip,
And if you wanted flavor
there was Lipton's onion dip.

Store-bought snacks were rare
because my mother liked to cook,
And nothing can compare to snacks
in Betty Crocker's book.

Weekends were for family trips
or staying home to play,
We all did things together --
even go to church to pray.

When we did our weekend trips
depending on the weather,
No one stayed at home because
we liked to be together.

Sometimes we would separate
to do things on our own,
But we knew where the others were
without our own cell phone.

Then there were the movies
with your favorite movie star,
And nothing can compare
to watching movies in your car.

Then there were the picnics
at the peak of summer season,
Pack a lunch and find some trees
and never need a reason.

Get a baseball game together
with all the friends you know,
Have real action playing ball
-- and no game video.

Remember when the doctor
used to be the family friend,
And didn't need insurance
or a lawyer to defend?

The way that he took care of you
or what he had to do,
Because he took an oath
and strived to do the best for you.

Remember going to the store
and shopping casually,
And when you went to pay for it
you used your own money?

Nothing that you had to swipe
or punch in some amount,
Remember when the cashier person
had to really count?

The milkman used to go
from door to door,
And it was just a few cents more
than going to the store.

There was a time when mailed letters
came right to your door,
Without a lot of junk mail ads
sent out by every store.

The mailman knew each house by name
and knew where it was sent;
There were not loads of mail addressed to
"present occupant."

There was a time when just one glance
was all that it would take,
And you would know the kind of car,
the model and the make.

They didn't look like turtles
trying to squeeze out every mile;
They were streamlined, white walls, fins,
and really had some style.

One time the music that you played
whenever you would jive,
Was from a vinyl, big-holed record
called a forty-five.

The record player had a post
to keep them all in line,
And then the records would drop down
and play one at a time.

Oh sure, we had our problems then,
just like we do today,
And always we were striving,
trying for a better way.

Oh, the simple life we lived
still seems like so much fun,
How can you explain a game,
just kick the can and run?

And why would boys put baseball cards
between bicycle spokes,
And for a nickel red machines
had little bottled Cokes?

This life seemed so much easier
and slower in some ways,
I love the new technology
but I sure miss those days.

So time moves on and so do we,
and nothing stays the same,
But I sure love to reminisce
and walk down memory lane.

This is a good idea for everyone!

Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to
that person's identity. You can make their job much easier
with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to
adopt: ICE.

ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry
in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with
the name and phone number of the person that the emergency services
should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have
your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your
time to do.

Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. Use
ICE1, ICE2, etc. for more than one contact. ICE your cell phone NOW!

Please pass this along.

Evening Billie. Thanks, I had a good day... actually, I'm tired tonight. I think I should stop playing tennis for a few days.

Hope you're enjoying your evening.

As I read this, I knew who had posted it..:))
So many pleasant and cherished memories surfaced, and I feel sorry for today's children's mostly overstimulated existences.
We used our imaginations and what was at hand - dreamed, and experimented with ideas and ways to do things.

Our surroundings were modest compared with today's glut of 'material things,' but we were grateful for and appreciated every little thing we had...even the Christmas hankies and stationery instead of designer clothes and video games.

We played cards and Monopoly and checkers and chess and Parchesi, etc., and worked jigsaw and crossword puzzles...read lots of books...listened to the console radio together as a family, to programs that were always "F for Family" rated...

Thanks for the Trip Back in Time, Dubya.

Praying for you and Eve,
LadyX

Headlines in today's paper http://www.tonawanda-news.com/story.asp?id=3170

GOP challenges Thompson's petition
Stacey Shepard
Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Rus Thompson’s bid for a seat on the Erie County Legislature has been a challenge in more ways than one.

The Grand Island contractor announced his intention last December to run against Republican incumbent Chuck Swanick in this year’s elections for the 10th District seat which covers Grand Island, Kenmore, the City of Tonawanda and parts of the Town of Tonawanda. At the time, Thompson was part of Primary Challenge, a group hoping to unseat all Legislature incumbents by taking them on in their party’s primary.

Then Swanick choose not to run and Thompson, a Republican, had his eyes set on the GOP’s endorsement. He was passed up two times by his party, which endorsed Bruce Kaiser. Its first choice, Bill Naab, declined their endorsement.

Still determined, Thompson went out and gathered more than 713 signatures over the past two months, enough to put him on the ballot for the Sept. 13 primaries.

But he faced another setback last week.

Thompson learned that Grand Island Republican Committee Chair Dick Planavsky filed a challenge with the Board of Elections against his petition.

“They’re saying I turned in false petitions ... even though they were hard-fought signatures and I probably knocked on three times more doors than they did,” Thompson said Monday. “There’s nothing wrong with one signature on there. We verified every one.”

Thompson and Democrat Thomas Troy of Kenmore are the only two in the race for the seat whose petitions have been challenged. Democrat Michele Iannello, who has the Conservative, Working Family and Independence parties endorsements, and Kaiser have no objections on file, Board of Elections officials said.

My rant:

Why do people with people who like rap and hip-hop music think I might like it too? And why do they load down their vehicles with speakers half the sizes of their trunks and turn that obscene garbage up so loud that I can hear every f word from 50 yards away?

There, I feel better now. Thanks.

Oh, I hear that, Tuscaloosa! Even with your own car windows up, they pull up beside you at a stop light and you can still hear it and feel the vibrations from their loud music. Thanks for coming by tonight. :)

You're welcome :-)

Seriously -- I think someone could make an anti-rap system and market it as such. Loud speakers, outwardly aimed smart-bomb type technology, honing in only on cars playing that other stuff, with the speakers blasting a choice of military marches, Beethoven's Fifth, or yodeling.

Hey, I can dream, can't I? LOL

They're sure not making this easy for you just to get on the ballot. :( I admire you for not letting them get the best of you, or hear the last from you!

Hope the swelling and pain starts going down soon. Are you soaking it, icing it, elevating it at night?
