(S.C.) Bus driver took bribe to ignore rape
Weekend Australian ^ | July 24, 2005 | Associated Press

A FORMER school bus driver in the United States has been sentenced to five years in prison for accepting a $US10 ($A13) bribe to ignore two students as they sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl.

Lacey Jane Bolen, 26, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to being an accessory after the fact to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, Assistant Prosecutor Kristi Harrington said.

Bolen's lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The bus was equipped with an emergency button to alert authorities to problems, but Bolen never triggered the device during the assault in South Carolina in January.

"At any point, she could have stopped this from happening to this young girl," Harrington said.

A student reported the incident to a school official the following day. The sex act had been caught on a school bus videotape and resulted in the arrests of Bolen and two 16-year-old students.

The two teens are awaiting trial on charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. They are charged as adults and could go to trial as early as next month.

Yes indeed, this is a true story. It happened in the county that I currently live in. It was in today's Post and Courier.

I believe a free country stands only on the character of its people....how can this country survive with trash like that?

Flame away guys: I think real sex crimes like rape, an adult molesting a child or any serious sexual assault should be bumped up a few notches and become death offenses the first time. We should start removing the sickos. I don't know the specifics of this incident but if it were a death offense maybe the offenders would have thought a little more about doing it first.

How am I supposed to flame you when I agree with every single word you wrote?

What an incredibly sick, depraved individual. Probable a voyeur.(spel?)

Ok, the lady (I'm loosely using the term here) failed in her duty and on the humane side. She deserves whatever punishment she gets.

But, aren't more details missing from the reporting?

As an example, the story says that another student reported the incident. But, did the victim report the crime? Did the victim have any intentions of reporting the crime? And, this next question may seem harsh, but nevertheless a question that perhaps should be asked..., was the victim really forcibly raped or was she a willing participant in the actions on the bus and it was not a forced rape? I know that sex with a minor is statutory rape, but do we know all the facts/details?

Were there any other students on the bus? If so, shouldn't perhaps some of those other students , if they had a conscience, tried to stop the rape?

Was this an actual rape, or was it two kids who asked the bus driver to look the other way while they had sex with with this girl consensually? Yes I know a 14 year old cant legally consent, but there is a difference between that and if they were holding her down and doing it against her will. This story is hard to believe either way.

"But, did the victim report the crime? Did the victim have any intentions of reporting the crime?"

You do appreciate that many rape victims, especially young rape victims, either don't report or delay reporting the crime out of fear, shame, denial, worry over how friends and family will react, etc. don't you?

Wait - lets go back.

The bus driver took a $10 bribe to ignore a kid getting raped?

You know what that lady's life is worth?

$10

Because if she had done that to my daughter, I would shoot her in the face, with a .50 cal

That day, sofort, without hesitation.

This used to be the case in most states. Rape used to be a capital crime. That changed in the 1930s; why, I don't know. We already know that child molesters cannot be reformed. If you let them out of prison, they will re-offend. It would be better for everybody if we make sure that they never get out of prison, and the only way to do that is to kill them. It works for me.
