CIA's Tenet was 'furious' over leak, Schumer says
The Buffalo (NY) Times ^ | July 23, 2005 | Douglas Turner

Posted on 07/23/2005 8:53:56 AM PDT by YaYa123

WASHINGTON - Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., revealed Friday that two years ago he discussed the blown cover of CIA operative Valerie Plame with then CIA director George Tenet and that Tenet "was furious." Tenet promptly called the Justice Department to demand an investigation into who in the Bush administration leaked Plame's identity to columnist Robert Novak, Schumer said at a hearing held by House and Senate Democrats.

Novak revealed Plame's identity in July 2003 in a column in which he said she played a key role in having her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, sent to Niger to investigate reports that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had tried to buy materials for a nuclear weapon there.

The Democratic panel heard from five former CIA operatives who said the disclosure of Plame's classified identity was a breach of the law that forbids government officials from revealing the identity of an undercover intelligence officer and a violation of trust that has harmed America's intelligence-gathering capabilities.

My information was that David Corn and Joe Wilson were bantering about during some interview where Wilson said "suppose my wife were a CIA Agent."

Mike Rosen of KOA in Denver brought that up during one of his shows. If so, Wilson was "outing" his wife long before anyone else was.

Johnson began his speech with an outright lie. He said he and everyone at CIA were under cover. Well, yeah, "light cover."

The "Agee law" that has allegedly been broken is very clear that it is about non-official (deep) cover.

Johnson is a LIAR.

I search one of the names on Larry's list of agents. I think if we searched them all, they would all turn up the same thing....Associate of nice Mr. Wilson. My conclusion would probably be....solicited.

***NOTE THE DATE---July 10, 2001

We can all be glad he is ex-CIA. I see the point of this pseudo hearing to make this Plame thing the greatest threat to national security that has ever occurred in the history of this country.

Boy, are Schumer and his pals going to be embarrassed when it is revealed that the leak came from the State Department. Of course Tenet was pissed, he knew right away that it came from State and was intended as a direct hit on the CIA for sending Wilson on the trip to Niger over State's objections. I had originally postulated that Tenet himself was Novak's source, but since the revelation about the State Department memo I think it's pretty obvious it came from State. State and CIA have been in an intelligence pissing contest over Iraq for three years now. As reported by the Washington Post, State did not want CIA sending anyone to Niger because they thought they had already debunked the Iraq/Niger uranium story.

It's time to start asking about this leak, Cui bono -- who benefits? Who had incentive to give the info to Bob Novak? We know his original source was not Rove or Libby. It was either someone high up in the CIA who wanted to get rid of Plame and expose her and her husband as frauds, or it was someone in the State Department who was already feuding with CIA and thought this would embarrass the CIA.

Dang! I have to leave for a while. Get some names of those testifying, and I will do as much research as I can this afternoon.

They are bound to say something that is demonstratably false, and perhaps will tip their hand.

Back in about 2 hours.

The two public sources I'm aware of are Novak's original article and the Vanity Fair article about the Wilsons. Novak’s article mentions two "senior administration sources." We now know that the second source was Rove. The first source revealed obviously CIA-specific information. In the Vanity Fair article, Wilson quoted Novak as saying that his original source was CIA. So the first source was almost certainly someone in the CIA. And Novak referred to a third conversation with a CIA person. That person apparently expanded upon what the first (CIA) person had told Novak. Or maybe it was the same person, but I doubt it.

Based on all this, I’m guessing that the first person was Tenet or a deputy. That person then told the third person (probably a career type) to give Novak additional information.

I hate to ruin Larry's little story, but Wilson did NOT give his report to officials at the CIA.

He gave his "report" to two unnamed people in his LIVING ROOM with his wife sitting next to him.

And there is Tenet's remarks:

"In an effort to inquire about certain reports involving Niger, CIA's counter-proliferation experts, on their own initiative, asked an individual with ties to the region to make a visit to see what he could learn"

Let's go back: 1997......Valerie Plame told her 3 day old boyfriend, nice Mr. Wilson, that she was undercover because???

The truth of the matter is...If you are really undercover, you don't tell.

I don't think for a nano-second that Tenet was misleading Bush about WMDs. Virtually every major intelligence service believed at the time that Saddam had them. So did the Clinton Administration. And they may have all been right, even if Saddam has since successfully hidden or destroyed them.

Wilson seems LESS upset about his wife being "outed", than he is about the war in Iraq....if this is supposed to be all about Rove/Libby outing his wife, why does he always seem to go off into a rant about the "illegality" of the war...STILL?

I don't think Wilson is or was leading anything...he is/was being led around. He is a pawn, drawn like a moth to a flame by money and notoriety in an ideological chess match.

It is simply a vanity thing.

Wilson is way too emotionally involved in this story, if you ask me.

He's been in government for years; he should know that if you hit us, we're going to hit you back.

I mean, he accused the White House of lying; did he expect them to just sit back and take it?

And how on earth could the White House refute the story -- that Wilson went to Niger at the suggestion of Cheney -- without bringing in WHO sent him?

And then there is this:

Novak: The Wilsons for Gore

Townhall.com ^ | 10/05/03 | Robert Novak

Posted on 10/05/2003 12:58:21 AM EDT by Pokey78

WASHINGTON -- On the same day in 1999 that retired diplomat Joseph Wilson was returned $1,000 of $2,000 he contributed to Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore a month earlier because it exceeded the federal limit, his CIA-employee wife gave $1,000 to Gore using a fictitious identification for herself.

In making her April 22, 1999, contribution, Valerie E. Wilson identified herself as an "analyst" with "Brewster-Jennings & Associates." No such firm is listed anywhere, but the late Brewster Jennings was president of Socony-Vacuum oil company a half-century ago. Any CIA employee working under "non-official cover" always is listed with a real firm, but never an imaginary one.

A footnote: In July when he revealed himself as author of a report commissioned by the CIA, Wilson sought a book agent. After being turned down by a prominent agent, he has now found one.

If you are really undercover, you don't tell.

Exactly. I have two members of my immediate family that I suspect (know) are in the CIA, but it is NEVER mentioned. Ever. I wouldn't dream of asking them.
