SEOUL President Roh Moo Hyun declared Thursday that under no circumstances would South Korea allow the United States to resort to a military attack against North Korea.
President George W. Bush insists that he wants to resolve the nuclear crisis through diplomacy, but he has not officially ruled out a military option, which he has called a "last choice."

Then why are we spending billions of tax paid money to protect them from North Korea? Fortress America sounds better and better.
In light of this statement, it's time to leave.
I don't think we do agree. I am not in favor of a pullout. The USFK is symbolic as much as it is tactical. And there is no viable alternate location.
I'm not discounting valid SK concerns, I know the importance of defending SK and containing NK, but the South's statement is pure self defeating ultimately suicidal appeasement. Neither we or the South can afford a nuclear NK. SK is greatly complicating things, as it will be difficult in any event to take out the North's nukes. But it must be done.
Thats about my assesment...the first few days would be a tactical retreat to buy time.
I've studied the situation too...although I haven't been over there, I'm sure that will change...I'm active AF.
Only thing I see preventing a nuclear retaliation is China....they are not going to be big on a nuke going of on their continent.

That means we can just up and leave the South Korean IDIOTS, and AFTER Kim Jong Il CONQUERS the South, we can attack with Impugnity ALL the cities!
There are soldiers atationed on the DMZ that would LOVE to get the "F" outta there!
Also, we can cut off all Imports from S. Korea, as it will VERY soon after the pullout become N. Korea South, and we can nationalize all the South Korean companies and assets in the US!

REALLY! And in response to our response, they'd level a few more American cities while they're at it. You think they're weapons are sitting in a personal storage facility we can take out with one hit? By the time we're responding to the first attack, their submarines will be ready to put an end to our republic, too.
MAD is great on paper. If responding meant a full blown exchange, I'm afraid we'd choose to absorb a hit in order to prevent the rest of the country from becoming an uninhabitable wasteland. The object is this: don't get to the point where China believes it needs to launch a first-strike ICBM at us out of defense. That may be unavoidable under some circumstances in the world, but Taiwan is hardly worth losing Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, and Dallas over. If you don't think they haven't wargamed this out, you're crazy.

Agreements are so much toilet paper in the threat of a nuclear exchange. If the Pentagon determines the risks are too high either conventionally or un-conventionally, we'll do what it's in our best interest.
You seem to forget a little thing called Tiananmen Square, in which a million demonstrators trying to overthrow the communists were left swinging in the wind by George H.W. Bush and "democratic' Europe for the sake of the mushrooming Chinese economy which has ironically been used to build the weapons that could destroy our nation. This would be the same Chinese economy which fueled the technology programs that manufactured the medium-range missile techonology which they sold to Iran, with extra special thanks to Bill Clinton. If we weren't going to fight for democracy when it had a legitimate shot at removing the communists in 1987 - when their army was a backwards, pissant operation, we're not going to do it with Taiwan now.
Pull our troops out of South Korea and expel the South Korean ambassador and embassy personnel. Now!
South Korea has a signifigant, well equipped, well trained military. They have an "army."
That is indeed the bottom line. The SGooks are doing a large amount of work to prepare for the situation ala east/west Germany when they reunite. The Chicoms and the SGooks just recently agreed to build a new span alongside Freedom Bridge between China and NKorea to help handle growing business between the two. NKorea doesn't do much business, and doesn't have any money, but agrees to the bridge as long as the other two pay for it. On the NKorea side the road goes straight to SKorea. Kimmie gets to sit on the curb and watch the world drive THRU his digs.
Should GW decide to settle the NUKE question the plan won't involve SKorea except they might hear the F-117's take off.
Not really the first thing but it will hit you once yo walk around town (any town) a bit. Parts of Seoul are as sophisticated as NY or London, other parts smell as bad as Paris in August.

Red China has replaced the Soviets as the big communist dog on the block and is now preparing to play games with our nuke subs. And, we have been cutting our nuke sub fleet. Not smart.
Okay, S Kor obviously doesn't need our troops. Maybe Japan would be a better choice for neutralizing N Kor.

the n korea/s.korea thing is what happens when you negotiate a 'truce' instead of finishing the war.
one side ALWAYS has to win decisively to end a conflict.
We did not win the Iraq war decisively.
Though we could have and should have and virtually have.
But since our object was the terrorist sadaam, and not the nation that sponsored him, the defeat of Iraq, is not unlike an ongoing civil war, with us being the police action.
S. Korea may have a democracy, but wWe lost the korean police action, because the issues of winner (the usa) and loser (The red chinese backed n. koreans) were never resolved completely.
Police actions are ALL losers. It's time to leave n. korea, they dont want us. We need to disentangle our troops from foreign wars where we are not wanted. and focus on the nations who want us, and want to resist communist china.
FWIW, Iraq signed a defense pact with Iran two days ago.
Apparently, our defeat of Sadaam, was not decisive enough to change their way of thinking.
For Iran is, our declared enemy.

There are no good answers for our foreign policy except to keep the heat on. I don't want them in harm's way, either, but that's in their job description, to be placed in harm's way. I made a comment in a post above that our disinterest in economically punishing China going back to the 80's has accelerated the situation we have today. Now, having an interdependent economic interest with China may be the only way to keep the peace, but the wild card with THAT scenario is if China continues to use up its resources at the current pace, they may have to seek "outside" resources to keep it afloat like Japan did in the thirties.
All I'm saying there are many many layers to this question beyond one pr*ck in Seoul.
