I love that natural swimming pool in Balmorhea! It is so neat! But I can see that coming to the "big city" would have been a big deal!

The rivalry did start in the '40's between Midland High and Odessa High, but I can't recall hearing about a specific game. Permian was built in 1960 and Midland Lee a few years later--and they have the real rivalry! It is brutal. But Permian and Odessa High can get into it, too!

Yeah, it was my first full summer in Lubbock. Summers in Houston are hot and muggy and San Antonio summers are just a bit drier. The summers here were new to me then. I remember arriving at work and looking at the black gooey splotches on the side of my car. I looked at the road only to see the asphalt bubbling! :-)

Get this, my family moved to Balmorhea from Houston! To say that I experienced culture shock would be an understatement. I loved the afternoon drives to Midland-Odessa once or twice a month because they offered a taste of civilisation. The state park in Balmorhea is fantastic. Where else can you visit a fully-stocked dive shop in the semi-desert of West Texas!

Life has been great here! It is still hot at nearly midnight, but the AC is cranked up so we don't really feel it.

Work has been slow, but we just have fun talking to each other then, so that is good. Busy would help the time go by faster, though.

I have to go pretty soon--have early work tomorrow and I have been staying up way to late for too many nights in a row.

Well, I have lived in just about every region of the State (except for the Valley and North Central, but I have visited those areas a lot). It is great; we have just about every climate and geography that you could want. We have a coast, desert, semi-desert, mountains, hills, plains, forests, etc. Then, there is the produce! Fresh Pecos cantalopes are the nectar of the gods and Poteet strawberries are exquisite when fresh. Don't forget the seafood and various meats. Damn, now I am hungry...

I was coming home from Abilene a couple of weeks ago and was behind an 18-wheeler who splashed hot asphalt all over my windshield and hood from some newly laid road. Icky stuff to clean off, I can tell ya!

Man, I guess you had culture shock! I'll bet you resented the heck out of your parents for a while for doing that to you!

Yes, that pool is the only one where you can swim and have fisheys nibble on your toes and legs, too! LOL!

Abilene is a neat town. I am thinking of moving near there. I am looking at Ballinger as a possible new home along with San Angelo and Llano (among a small number of other places).

I think Abilene is a pretty town--with all the college campuses and all those huge mesquites--never have seen them that big anywhere else. They look oriental.

I think, though, if we ever have a chance to move--and I pray we do some day!!!!!--I would love the hill country. And Llano is sort of the beginning of it. But San Angelo's nice, too!....so many choices!

Well, we have scrub brush and grassland here. There are trees, but most of them were planted. I'll post another pic taken from campus that should give you an idea of what the city is like.

I really miss the Hill Country during the spring. It is kinda hard to be in grad school here when you know the Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush are in bloom and covering meadows and rolling hills.
