XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX WED JULY 06, 2005 11:09:22 ET XXXXX
SEN. SCHUMER CAUGHT ON CELLPHONE: 'WE ARE GOING TO WAR' OVER SUPREME COURT
**Exclusive**
Senate Judiciary Committee member Chuck Schumer got busy plotting away on the cellphone aboard a Washington, DC-New York Amtrak -- plotting Democrat strategy for the upcoming Supreme Court battle.
Schumer promised a fight over whoever the Presidents nominee was: It's not about an individual judge
It's about how it affects the overall makeup of the court.
The chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was overheard on a long cellphone conversation with an unknown political ally, and the DRUDGE REPORT was there!
Schumer proudly declared: We are contemplating how we are going to go to war over this.
Schumer went on to say how hard it was to predict how a Supreme Court justice would turn out: Even William Rehnquist is more moderate than they expected. The only ones that resulted how they predicted were [Antonin] Scalia and [Ruth Bader] Ginsburg. So most of the time they've gotten their picks wrong, and that's what we want to do to them again.
Schumer later went on to mock the Gang of 14 judicial filibuster deal and said it wasnt relevant in the Supreme Court debate.
A Priscilla Owen or Janice Rogers Brown style appointment may not have been extraordinary to the appellate court but may be extraordinary to the Supreme Court.
By the time the train hit New Jersey, Schumer shifted gears and called his friend and Gang of 14 member, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.
The two talked in a very friendly manner about doing an event sometime this week together.

So do I. And even if he didn't, The Eeeeevil Karl Rove does.
Lindsey "Grab Your Ankles" Graham has yet to learn that bi-partisan means agreeing with the liberal
I disagree. The GOP has long been too passive. Liberals have been using a flamethrower and "principled" conservatives have been trying to put it out with a cup of water. IOW, No, we can't all get along. don't wimp out on us now McGavin.
He'd probably like that...
Exactly. IF there were wiretapping involved, we'd know who he was talking to.
We have that opportunity if we don't blow our whole arsenal on the first one. By that, I don't mean nominating anyone less than a conservative, but rather not foaming at the mouth about "what might be" instead of "what is."
It will be much, much easier if we have a majority in both houses of congress. That must continue to be solidified or this will be a moot point, and sooner rather than later. In fact, if we can force the other side to freak out, we stand a chance of picking up more seats in the Senate which could help us. I don't care how logical one's argument is, if you come at me with foam dripping from the corners of your mouth I am going to back away. You've got to understand that is how the average American will see it. We want THE OTHER side to look like that, not us.
Looking loony, no, make that, being loony has the potential to severely harm us, much as it has the left. We must be thoughtful, calm and reasoned. This is about strategy that produces results. There are severe consequences for not looking past what is right in front of you. I would hate to win one battle, but because we didn't do it smart, we lose the war.
Good grief! I'm not saying "can't we all get along". What I am saying is we are shooting like a bunch of amatures. We're aiming at and hitting our own. At least the left attacks the right. Here, it's the right attacking the right. It was bad enough being shot at from the left.
Something tells me that Lindsey has learned it, and puts it into practice.
You could be onto something there.
I hate to predict this...but realistically the libs will get us to put some wishy washy "moderate" (liberal in disguise) on the bench.
I get your point McGavin. I wasn't one of the ones piling on Gonzales and I think he is a fair choice for the position he is in.
I just hope the "right" doesn't go all soft on us.
Yep, I believe you're right about that //The Republicans lost their balls
Well, of course. The democrats have already lost the House, the Senate, the Presidency, most registered voters, most state governorships, and most state legislatures...all that they've got "left" (pun intended) is the SCOTUS for a powerbase.
If they weren't willing to "fight, fight, fight" a SCOTUS battle, then they might as well fold up their little tent and go back to their bathhouses and Manhattan cocktail parties.
Our Senate Republicans have no spine or stomach for a fight.
That is why we will lose.
We keep it up and the left can just sit back and watch us blow each other up. This president has done a pretty fine job of selecting judges. We should hold our fire at minimum until he has nominated someone.
We elected the man because we trust his judgement. He's done some strange stuff, but it always turns out to our advantage.
... and he IS, Bob
**Bend Over Here It Comes Again
The TIME to talk about it is BEFORE.
Once the President of the United States nominates his choice, THAT IS IT. The train will have left the station. And we would be standing on the platform like jerks if it is a moderate or a centrist, who will not guarantee us a conservative swing vote on major, bedrock issues.
If you think any GOP forum or conservative group is going to go after the President's choice in a big way, after things are in cement, you don't know the nature of the beast. They will tell us all to shut up and get with the program, otherwise "do you want Hilary in charge?", or some other such lame threat that always politically emasculates us.
Conservatives acted PRECISELY at the time they should have.
If this be War With the Liberal Democrats, it may also be internecine War With the Moderate Republicans as well. I for one don't fear that battle.

Which brings me back to my original point: if you are disturbed that two colleagues who are ideologically different are friendly to each other, GET OUT MORE.
