Senator Coburn Introduces "Parents Right To Know Act"

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- US Senator Tom Coburn has introduced a bill that would require parents be notified before contraceptive drugs and prescription devices are distributed to minor children by certain public health clinics.

The Oklahoma Republican and practicing physician says he disagrees with the federal policy that allows children to make reproductive decisions without their parent's knowledge.

He says the policy contributes to a growing problem of sexually transmitted diseases and unintended teen pregnancies and abortions by discouraging parental involvement.

A companion bill was introduced in the House by Representatives by Missouri Republican Todd Akin.

We'd need some mainstream exposure for Coburn.

Ho ho ho! The media HATES Coburn more than any other lawmaker in Washington.

FYI: Because they bankroll the election of people like Senator Tom Coburn of OK who believes in the radical concept that families will spend their money better than government. "There isn’t going to be an appropriations bill that I don’t go after,” Coburn vowed. Robert Novak reports: The Oklahoma GOP establishment thought it was finished with Coburn when he fulfilled his term-limit pledge and left Congress after three terms, ending in 2000. His subsequent memoir showed his contempt for Capitol Hill mores. When a Senate seat opened for the 2004 election, Coburn withstood vicious attacks in both the Republican primary and general election campaign. [The Club For Growth's financial backing was a primary reason he won] Dr. Tom Coburn, a U.S. senator from Oklahoma for less than four months, last week was up to old tricks he started playing in the House a decade ago. He was making colleagues' lives miserable by exposing wasteful, unnecessary spending that is supposed to stay hidden. The Senate establishment, like its House counterpart, has retaliated by bringing ethics charges against the obstetrician-senator for going home to Muskogee, Okla., to deliver babies. The Washington Post reports that thieving Senators are stuffing a must pass emergency military spending bill with tons of pork: Meanwhile, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) will go against the flow by attempting to strip out funds that he deems are not urgently needed. As Mark Twain said: It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly American criminal class except Congress.

I agree. Destory 1 and no worries about 2. 2 will sway with whatever party happens to be in power. Thats not good enough.

I suppose that is why after he said it the principals from those same schools denied what he said?

I know the man personally. He would not have said it if he didn't have a basis for it.

He is one of the most decent I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Trust me. If he said it...there was a reason.

I added some emphasis, and I will also say that I think Coburn, more than any other Senator in a very long time, is focused on shrinking.

Really, this is a bad bill. The correct response would be to declare this a states' right. The feds don't have the authority to deal with this one way or the other.

Did you arrive recently on this planet?

There are no (zero) states' rights.

Yep, I already did that. They are making sacrifices so we are able to live in freedom. Not enough Americans realize this.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., checks his watch between patients at his medical office in Muskogee, Okla., Monday, May 9, 2005. Coburn is fighting to keep practicing medicine, despite a Senate policy that bans senators from working at certain professions.(AP Photo/Mel Root)

I like the fact that he's working his job as a doctor. (He's not a career politican)

A good reform would be that Congress would only work in Washington D.C. for one month. That would prevent the expansion of socialism in our nation.

Uh yeah ... holding down a real job shows the country exactly how idle our Senators really are despite claims of "running the country".

Mr Blonde,
I don't know in which part of the Sooner State you live, but one only need visit briefly with a few residents of SE Oklahoma to realize that Senator Coburn is speaking the truth. I have family in and around Haskell County, and when I asked them about these statements, I was told that they had encountered more lesbians in the rural South than when they lived in Tulsa. Oddly, although there is a large lesbian contingent, SE Oklahoma doesn't seem to have a correspondingly sizable gay male population. Fear of violence against gay males would seem to be a plausible explanation.

Thanks for the info! I knew he wouldn't have said it if he didn't have a basis for it. He is an extremely honest man.

Thanks for the ping. I'll come back and check this out further later, but it looks as if Cobern is a pretty good guy. I'd like to see some of his views about issues other than finance. I'll be back.
