Senator Coburn Introduces "Parents Right To Know Act"

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- US Senator Tom Coburn has introduced a bill that would require parents be notified before contraceptive drugs and prescription devices are distributed to minor children by certain public health clinics.

The Oklahoma Republican and practicing physician says he disagrees with the federal policy that allows children to make reproductive decisions without their parent's knowledge.

He says the policy contributes to a growing problem of sexually transmitted diseases and unintended teen pregnancies and abortions by discouraging parental involvement.

A companion bill was introduced in the House by Representatives by Missouri Republican Todd Akin.

If it's a Federal budget tie, it'll fly. Fair enough that Congress gets to make the rules on the Federal purse. But if Congress attempts to Commerce Clause this, the Supreme Court will sneeze.

This is a good idea. FL tried this and had to amend the FL constitution because of FL's privacy amendment.

They now have a parental notification law because they made a constitution amendment AND it provides and out clause via a court order.

If this has a similar "out clause" then it would be sustainable.

Read conservativeman's link on more info a couple of posts up. It confirms what I said - federal spending.

Thats a VERY real possibility.

Coburn has expressed his anger with judicial activism several times.

Lott is stealing!
Not only that...he's boasting about it!

And not only THAT... He's not in jail after doing it!

I understand where you are coming from, but I'd like to suggest this. I'm not sure you'd disagree either.

I wish more of our Congressmen and Senators were part timers. I would like to see them paid about 20% of what they are, spend less than two months in session per year, and live mainly in their home districts.

As I see it, today they are too far removed from real life. Given near full-time employment in the nation's capital, they have far too much time on their hands, to medal in the lives of our citizens. If anything they create more problems than they fix.

LOL!

No...but I bet somewhere in Mississippi there's a jail named after him!

I bet he has several things named after him there!

Your post is worth repeating:

"Of course if the government got out of health care then no one could get upset at what private clinics did...

"Also, further reducing/eliminting TANF/ADFC welfare spending would help with family structure.

"I'd rather seen Coburn focus on shrinking government then this sort of 'fiddling' with it."

I added some emphasis, and I will also say that I think Coburn, more than any other Senator in a very long time, is focused on shrinking.

If you forced some of them to spend more time in their home districts many of them would quit, LOL!

Anybody think an Allen-Coburn ticket can trounce Billary in '08?

That is my dream ticket, anyhoo.

Given near full-time employment in the nation's capital, they have far too much time on their hands, to mettle in the lives of our citizens. If anything they create more problems than they fix.

AMEN! Also worth repeating.

That would be my dream ticket.

We'd need some mainstream exposure for Coburn.

Glad to see this. Even if it doesn't get passed, it'll certainly shine more light on what the Progressive/Liberal/Socialist/Democrats are truly up to where our children and our parental rights over said children are concerned.

I'd rather see Allen-Watts and let Coburn keep doing the people's work in the Senate. If we lost Coburn to the VP we wouldn't have much left.

Yep!

We should get as much done as possible while we have control of the House and Senate.

We should throw everything at the liberals!

An Oklahoman Freeper was touting Watts as a very likely candidate in the governor's race there, so he might not be interested in a VP slot right now. But Watts would be tremendous as a VP and future POTUS.

I agree.

We've gotta get a new governor here.

Ours doesn't get up until 11 o clock in the morning, and plays video games the rest of the day.

He is the laziest governor in the country. Brad Henry.
