An Islamic website statement claimed today that Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaida in Iraq chief, has fled to an unidentified “neighbouring country” with two Arab doctors treating him for gunshot wounds to his lung.

There was no way to verify the authenticity of the claim. The site used to carry al-Qaida postings, but has fallen out of use recently. Soon, the posting appeared on another militant site, where it quickly came under attack from other posters as untrue and unauthorised by al-Qaida.

The statement from somebody identified only as al-Khalidi – the same name as a regular poster for the site in the past – said the information was based on accounts of “brothers close to the holy warriors in Iraq and who are in contact with them.” He did not elaborate.

Mideast security officials told The Associated Press in the Jordanian capital Amman they could not verify the authenticity of the posting or veracity of its contents.

On Tuesday, a web statement in the name of al-Zarqawi’s group, al-Qaida in Iraq, said the terrorist mastermind has been wounded. But US officials cautioned they did not know if the posting was authentic, and privately said the information also may have been designed to purposefully mislead.

Web Posting Claims al-Zarqawi Fled Iraq

AMMAN, Jordan - An Islamic Web site statement claimed Wednesday that Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaida's point man in Iraq, has fled to a "neighboring country" with two Arab doctors treating him for gunshot wounds to his lung.

The claim's authenticity could not be confirmed. The site used to carry messages from al-Qaida, but has fallen out of use recently. Soon, the statement appeared on another militant site, where other posters quickly denounced it as untrue and unauthorized by the terror group.

The statement came a day after a message in the name of al-Zarqawi's group, al-Qaida in Iraq, appeared on another Web site, saying the terrorist mastermind has been wounded. U.S. officials cautioned they did not know if that posting was authentic and privately said the information also may have been designed to purposely mislead.

Also Wednesday, the Iraqi government said security forces have killed Sabhan Ahmad Ramadan, a senior al-Zarqawi aide in northern Iraq.

Ramadan, also known as Agha Abu Saad, was killed as he was manning a checkpoint in the northern province of Nineveh, the government said in a statement. It added that Ramadan was a leading aide to Abu Talha — the head of operations in Mosul for al-Zarqawi and his al-Qaida in Iraq terror group.

Wednesday's message from somebody identified only as al-Khalidi — the same name as somebody who used the site regularly in the past — said the information was based on accounts of "brothers close to the holy warriors in Iraq and who are in contact with them." He did not elaborate.

Al-Zarqawi "was secretly smuggled to a neighboring country a few days ago in a complicated and organized operation," the message said, but it did not identify the country.

It said al-Zarqawi was in "stable condition now" after he incurred a "bullet wound which penetrated his right lung."

Mideast security officials told The Associated Press in Amman that they could not verify the authenticity of the posting or its contents.

Al-Zarqawi has claimed responsibility for attacks on Iraqi civilians and security forces and kidnappings and beheadings of foreigners, and has a $25 million bounty on his head.

Jordan following Zarqawi reports

AMMAN, Jordan -- Jordan is closely following reports Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, has been gravely wounded.

Government spokeswoman Asma Khoder told reporters in Amman Wednesdsay: "The government is monitoring all press reports."

Officials, however, have no additional information about him, except what has been published, she added.

A militant Islamic Web site reported Wednesday Zarqawi was evacuated from Iraq after being injured.

Zarqawi has been sentenced twice to death in absentia in Jordan and is currently being tried in absentia for planning to bomb the headquarters of Jordanian intelligence in Amman with chemical weapons.

Jordan King Abdullah recently said the former Iraqi Baath regime of ousted President Saddam Hussein refused several Jordanian requests in the past to hand over Zarqawi.

Zarqawi's sister who lives in Zarqa east of Amman refused to say whether the family had any information about her brother.

My guess is this is all distraction, probably because we are actually very close to him right now and he's panicking because we've nabbed many of those lately who can probably tell us where his haunts are.

Could be - maybe they have a new way to track him when he rears his ugly head, and they are putting out info that he fled Iraq to force him to communicate when others call to find out if it is true.

Correct - With #2 being the least likely - When he's dead we are going to know it rather quickly -

I also have to question any of the "Zarqawi is wounded with a lung shot" spin stories. They just don't add up.

TERRORISM: ALGERIAN SALAFITE WEBMASTER ARRESTED IN SYRIA SAYS EXPERT

London, 25 May (AKI) - An Algerian extremist believed to manage the al-Qaeda-aligned Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC)'s website has been arrested in the Syrian capital Damascus, an expert on Islamic extremism said on Wednesday. Hani al-Sebai, director of the London-based al-Maqrizi Institute for Historical Studies, announced Sakir Adil's arrest in a message posted to centre's website. According to al-Sebai, Adil was seized from a Damascus internet cafe and bundled onto a flight for Algeria. As well as being the alleged webmaster for the GSPC - one of Algeria's main Islamic terrorist groups - Adil is also accused of being a GSPC 'correspondent' for websites belonging to the Kurdish Islamist militant group Ansar al-Sunna and other terror groups.

Adil, originally from the eastern province of Skikda, has already been imprisoned in Algeria three times since he was 17, accused of having supported various jihadist groups. He left Algeria in 2003 and moved to Syria, where he was living until his arrest.

Last week, the GSPC claimed responsibility for bomb attacks in two different locations in which 12 Algerian soldiers died and seven were injured. One of these two attacks took place in Skikda, when militants detonated a home-made bomb as a military patrol was passing, injuring 7 soliders, the leading Arabic-language newspaper El Khabar reported.

El Khabar quoted security experts as saying the GSPC has intensified its attacks to sabotage a general amnesty expected to be offered to rebels and members of the armed forces this year. Despite the recent flare-up, extremist violence has tailed off sharply in the past few years, bringing back much needed investment to the country.

The GSPC denied responsibility for an infamous roadblock massacre of 14 people south of the capital on 13 April. The group, along with the other principal militant group, the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), is the main police suspect for the killings. In recent weeks, government forces have launched a major manhunt in Islamic strongholds in eastern and western Algeria.

Militants - including the GSPC and the GIA - took up arms in 1992 and waged a campaign of violence after the government annulled elections that a hardline Islamist party was poised to win. The 13-year-long conflict has cost up to 200,000 lives and an estimated 30 billion dollars in damages.
