Woman Jailed for Calling 911 to Complain [about pizza parlor's refusal to deliver]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An 86-year-old woman was jailed after police said she called 911 dispatchers 20 times in a little more than a half-hour — all to complain that a pizza parlor wouldn't deliver.

Dorothy Densmore was charged with misusing the 911 system, a jail spokeswoman said.

She told dispatchers Sunday that a local pizza shop refused to deliver a pie to her south Charlotte apartment, said Officer Mandy Giannini. She also complained that someone at the shop called her a "crazy old coot," Giannini said.

Densmore wanted them arrested. Instead, police came to arrest her, and she resisted, Giannini said.

It's unusual for someone to face charges for nonemergency calls, Giannini said. But on Sunday, Densmore kept calling 911, even after she was told to stop, Giannini said.

When an officer arrived at her apartment, the 5-foot-tall, 98-pound woman attacked him, Giannini said. Densmore scratched him, kicked and bit his hand, she said.

Densmore also is charged with resisting a public officer and two counts of misusing the 911 system, jail records show.

Great to hear the old girl still has her teeth. Lot of folks that age couldn't bite a cop.

Who's to say she wasn't holding her teeth in her hands at the time?

People make some weird calls. This was supposedly a real 911 call:

"Caller: "I'm scared, I just got a Ouija board for my birthday, and now there's writing on my wall and I can't get it off ... this thing is going back to K-Mart first thing in the morning!"

But seriously, this is a problem. I hope the following statistic is not true:

"At some agencies--usually the very large, urban cities--up to 80% of 911 calls on non-emergencies."

I got this from http://www.911dispatch.com/information/brief_book.html

If you haven't heard this call you have to listen.

It's a woman complaining to 9/11 about her hamburgers being made wrong.

Snopes said they can't determine if it's real, but it is a hoot!

86 years old? She might need to move in with her family, because I think she could have Alzheimer's or dementia. Or both : (

It would be kind of them to take her to a hospital, and find out if she's okay "upstairs".

How many cats did she have in her home?

A somewhat ditsy dozen or a full out nutbar hundred? That's the real unit of measure for crazy old women.

I'd hate to be the security guard who tries to undress her at the airport.

My son (FR member "smaagee") is a cop. He responded to a 911 call from a 13 year old girl who said her older brother hit her in the head.

What he found out when he got there was that the brother did indeed hit her in the head....He threw a french fry across the dining room table and hit her with it.

And some people think they can get away with anything because they are elderly.

I am actively pursuing a 911 dispatch job. I just interviewed last week. Anyways, I did a sit-in at the Sheriff's compound and most of the calls were non-emergency. Most were from parents who couldn't control their kid/kids. Siblings fighting, son pissed off and ranting and raving. On one call, it took the dispatcher about 5 minutes to get info from a guy complaining about his roommate. The problem? his roommate wouldn't listen to him. And people complain about 911 being busy.

There should be fines for this. Of course the dispatcher has to be curtious while telling the idiots these are not 911 calls. I hope I get the job! lol

We have welfare slime in Houston constantly calling 911 to get a ride to their scheduled medical appointments.

They tie up emergency resources - and don't pay a dime.

I'd LOVE to see them in jail !

I believe it. There was an episode of COPS where these two hippy morons got into a fit while eating their Burger King. The dumb hippy man called 911 because dumb hippy woman threw her burger at him!

I see you will have a lot of laughs on the job, not just stress. But truly there should be fines for idiots who abuse the system. Maybe it will have to go the route of the 411 calls - charge per call. If you have an emergency, you'd be glad to pay the $1.50. If you call frivolously, you may call less often.

You don't call because you cannot control your daughter.

If your daughter is being physically abusive, yes you do. My daughter, at 14, towered over me and outweighed me by 30 lbs. She got mad because I wouldn't let her date a 21 year old guy after I caught her skipping school to meet this guy. She slammed me up against the refrigerator and knocked me unconcious and would have killed me if my husband hadn't pulled her off of me. Yes, we called 911. She then assaulted the officer and they had to put handcuffs on her to control her. Other times she busted the front glass door in my husband's face, broke a bottle and threatened me with it, and threatened to stab us to death in our sleep. And we are not alone. According to FBI files:

Thirty years ago, arrests of children for assaulting their parents was almost unheard of. During the past fifteen years, there has been a steady increase in children abusing their parents. In 1983, the UCR showed a total of 1,120 arrests of juveniles for domestic violence. By 1995, it had risen to 2,177 cases. In 1991, there were a total of 2,523 children arrested for domestic violence. In 1994, it was 3,743 cases, and in 1996, it had increased to 4,400. Another tremendous jump occurred in 1997 – up to 5,018 cases. In the short period of fifteen years, there has been a 348 percent increase in children committing domestic violence offenses.”

And of course, there will be those that will blame the parent's lack of discipline. In my case, she first strangled a cat to death at age 2. By the time she was 7, I had her in therapy for her violent behavior. She had individual therapy and we participated in family therapy. We even took parenting classes. Several times we were accused of abuse for trying to control her when she got violent, as we were in the aforementioned case, when my husband merely pulled her arms behind her back and put her out the front door. Parent abuse by teenagers is under-reported. These same kids will go on to abuse their spouses and their children if this behavior is allowed to continue. It must be reported and children must learn that there are severe consequences for violent behavior.
