Maybe I sound like a one-note Johnny beating to death this issue of illegal alien "cheap labor."
But, I believe, when President Bush tells us we need to keep our back door wide open because "there are some jobs Americans will not do," he is acknowledging a profound lack of faith in the free enterprise system and the law of supply and demand.
Putting aside for the moment all of the policies of the federal government designed to artificially inflate wages such as minimum-wage laws, high taxes and wealth-transfer schemes why are the wants and needs of agribusinesses for cheap labor any concern of the president of the United States.
I would like to be able to hire award-winning investigative journalists for minimum wage. I can't seem to do it. Should I petition Congress and the president to locate foreigners to come work for WND to meet my needs? Of course not.
It would be ludicrous to expect the government to concern itself with such a matter. It would indeed be un-American.
Legal costs are very expensive in this country. Would the president suggest the answer is importing foreign lawyers to bring the costs down?
Medical costs are high. Should we import foreign doctors to give the American MDs some competition?
No. I don't think any American would suggest such ideas not even the president.
Yet, Bush has no problem victimizing Americans on the lowest rung of the economic ladder with additional foreign competition. Does this make sense to any one?
Jobs currently being done by millions of illegal aliens were once done almost exclusively by legal immigrants, adult Americans and teenagers getting their first work experience. What was wrong with that?
It seems to me the president not only shows a complete lack of interest in American homeland security by justifying illegal immigration and open borders with the phony need for cheap labor, he also demonstrates no understanding of basic economics.
If there are no workers to perform jobs at a minimal pay level, the wages will increase to attract those workers. This is called the law of supply and demand. It's not a theory. It's not a hypothesis. It's not guesswork. It's a natural law.
What would be wrong with paying higher wages for work considered unattractive to many Americans?
Isn't that the American way?
There are lots of dirty, hard jobs to be performed in America. Those jobs will all be filled when employers make them financially attractive enough to American workers by paying competitive wages.
In some cases, that might mean higher prices to American consumers. But so what? It seems to me that would be a small price to pay for maintaining the American culture, for lower crime rates and for increased national security.
Bush is the first president to acknowledge publicly his soft attitude toward illegal immigration is shaped, at least in part, by his belief mistaken, I would suggest that it's good for the American economy.
He's wrong about that, as I have argued before, because he is not factoring into the negatives into the equation billions leaving the U.S. economy for Mexico where that money represents the second biggest contribution to that nation's gross national product, the drain on U.S. taxpayer-supported entitlements, increased crime, higher law enforcement costs and the financial drains on the medical system and the schools.
And, of course, there is the issue that should always be foremost in the mind of a president of the United States national security.
How are out-of-control illegal immigration and a wide-open border a bargain for America?
I just don't get it.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
>>>"How are out-of-control illegal immigration and a wide-open border a bargain for America?" For what its worth, I just don't get it either.
As a blue state denizen...it goes like this:
Pay for play...contract for a job is given to said paper company.
Said paper company has a group of illegals as workers.
Workers are thrown peanuts, General fund is billed the market rate.....left over monies...go where????
As for the comments 'Americans wouldn't do the work'
way back when....
Teens need more work. As a teen I did a lot of work.
Working permits have limited this.
Kids aren't expected to work...this is a DOWNFALL
Allowance has turned into early welfare conditioning.

There seems to be no concern when Mexico and other countries dump their excess labor at below market value. On the other hand, when the steel companies face unfair competition there is no problem with imposing tariffs. The same with the lumber industry.
The president and many of our other leaders dont recognize labor as a commodity for sale just like steel or lumber. They seem to operate as if businesses are the only entities engaging in commerce. In reality, most Americans have nothing other than labor to sell and this toleration of unfair dumping of excess labor in the American market is clearly interfering with rational operation of the free markets. We hear a lot about the evil of labor unions, but I contend that the distortions caused by illegal immigration have far greater potential to destroy our general prosperity.
ACLU and others routinely support murderous foreigners over law-abiding US citizens, so what's the difference?
Medical costs are high. Should we import foreign doctors to give the American MDs some competition?
Already underway, together with sending doctors' work overseas (medical transcriptions, interpretation of radiology scans).
And now, importing foreign politicians (allowing Ah-nold Governator of California to run for President, in direct contravention of the Constitution?)
Cheers!
"All markets are free, but some are freer than others."
It's sad that the longer I live, the more quotes I can borrow from Animal Farm and adapt to the working of our own system.
United States Senate has approved a bill permitting 50,000 foreign nurses to enter the country to meet the huge shortage
If Bush were paid off by drug runners from Mexico, what would he do differently?
Arthur, I can't puzzle out an answer- despite all the catcalls from the Left ( and others ) the President is an intelligent man. And, I think he generally has the best interests of America & Americans at heart.
The situation with our borders is baffling- I just know we need to do better, and differently than the status quo.
"And, I think he generally has the best interests of America & Americans at heart."
Actually, I agree with you. He generally does care about people, although he doesn't put Americans first. And there seems to be an underground motif here for such pandering to Mexico.
Drug dealers tend to say, "If I don't sell it, someone else does." And considering that Afghanistan is doing so well in narcotics, and Mexico is doing so well on narcotics, and then we get to Mena, Arkansas-- GW's father, and the Clintons.
It all fits together very neatly, sad to say. The coziness with the Clintons, Mena Arkansas, Afghanistan, Mexico, closet lewd humor, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Specter Primary. Heck, why not even throw in Skull-and-Bones? We're being played.
Can't say I disagree. You may find my new tagline of interest...
And the welfare state has eliminated the corollary phrase:
"Americans wouldn't do the work...Americans starve to death."
No rational mind can possibly argue that illegal immigration is good for the US, economically or otherwise.
I believe I know Bushes position on buisness and free trade. Can anyone tell me his position on 13,000,000 illegal Mexicans invading the USA? Why does the administration simply not address this concern. I have spoken to a dozen people in past 2 weeks who have all echoed the same concerns. They are all people who voted Republican, as I did, and who now feel this is the preeminent concern for America, and the silence is deafening. The glacial pace of judicial nominations being addressed is up there too. Each are asking themselves if there is a dimes difference between the policies, if not the retoric, of the Bush administration and any democrat coming down the line. If this is not addressed over the next year, I am worried that many will simply not be motivated to vote, thus allowing the morally vacuous democrats to make substantial gains.
Actually, medical services are being outsourced to India. Our hospital telerads X-rays to India to be read by Indian radiologists. We lost 2 radiologists at our hospital to this kind of outsourcing. I do not know what other services are likewise outsourced. The emergency room can get a reading report back in 25 minutes, about the same time as coming from the X-ray dept. If there is a missed finding, I do not know who gets sued.
