The woman who has become nationally known for allegedly planting a finger in a bowl of Wendy's chili smiled and appeared relaxed Monday as she mouthed "I love you all" to family members during her arraignment in a San Jose courtroom.
Authorities have accused Anna Ayala, 39, of being a scam artist who attempted to shake down the fast-food chain after the March 22 incident at a Wendy's in San Jose, but the Las Vegas woman appeared in court before a small fan club.
A dozen supporters came to the courthouse wearing T-shirts emblazed with "Free Anna Ayala" or "We Support Anna Ayala" on the front and "INNOCENT" on the back. Bailiffs required them to turn the T-shirts inside out to conceal the message before they entered the courtroom.
Ayala, 39, was extradited from Las Vegas on Friday and is being held in Santa Clara County jail. She declined Monday to enter a plea, and Judge Jerome Nadler set a May 18 hearing, where her attorneys are expected to seek reduction of Ayala's $500,000 bail.
At the end of the proceeding, Ayala gave a big wave and told the judge:

I understand the crowd was impressed when she flashed a "thumbs up" to the photographers till they realized it was someone else's thumb...
I hope Wendy's sues this lady.
Them and all the low wage employees at that store that got reduced hours!!
She deserves a 1-finger salute.
This beotch is lucky she is in jail; the employees that were laid off because of he bullsqueeze haven't been able to get to her to beat her to death.
My question is... where in Hell did she get the finger? LOL!, is anyone missing one? :)
I'd guess the little scammer has nothing BUT I hope the judge puts her in jail until she tells us where the finger came from....AND THEN...put an apron on her and let her work as a prison cook.
I still want to know how she got her hands on a detached finger. I mean, I have some really good friends who're always willing to lend a hand if I need help, but it takes a REAL friend to lend a finger...
This should have happend at KFC not Wendys. KFC could put out a commerical featuring food 'finger licking good'.
These are part of the populace that opposes tort reform because they, too, hope to one day strike it rich through bogus litigation.
Absolutely. I hope each employee sues in a separate cause of action. This woman will be paying judgments for the rest of her life. And this will be a California jury -- they LOOOOVE playing "ching ching, let the cash register ring!" when they can.
I have an idea....Instead of Fox News covering Michael Jackson and Jennifer Wilbanks 24/7, they should concentrate on court cases like this one, where people are trying to scam the system for ill-gotten gain. Call it "Tort Abuse TV."
Every Freeper who watches Fox News should shut off their TV sets every time they air any info about michael or ms. wilbanks. The drop in ratings for that time period, and the correlation to the story aired will help executives at fox news get the picture, and maybe start airing actual news items.
Another....."i'm just a victim!"
I heard that her husband was a shop teacher.
I want to know how she was able to put on makeup before her appearence yesterday. Did her lawyer provide for her? Somehow I feel that San Jose will make a heroine out of her somehow. UFB.
